A shopaholics guide to Florida

With the value of the pound against the dollar so attractive you dont have to be a mathematician to work out that designer brands are much more affordable in Florida than in the UK. So here are some of our top tips when shopping in Florida.

Vouchers

As any bargain hunter knows, money-off vouchers are the best way to get a good price. You’ll find books of vouchers in shopping malls, hotels and tourist spots and often you will be asked if you have a voucher to use against your purchase. Don’t be bashful – everyone does it.

Tax

Florida doesn’t have VAT. Instead there is a sales tax, which isn’t refundable when you return to the UK.

Shopping Malls

Americans drive everywhere, so malls are usually out of town. Look out for shuttle buses from the main resorts and hotels. Shopping malls open for up to 12 hours a day, are air-conditioned and have a multitude of stores. You can spend the whole day there, as there are restaurants and food courts catering to all appetites. Some malls are so vast, we recommend picking up a map when you arrive and arrange a meeting place, in case anyone gets lost. The Mall at Millennia, Orlando is an example of an upscale mall, which even has valet parking. Florida Mall, Orlando is the largest and has 25 million visitors per year.



Outlet Centres


This is where the real bargains are to be had. Originally, they sold less-than-perfect goods, end of season stock and samples from designer fashion houses. These days, they are just as comprehensive in their offering as their mainstream counterparts and you can rely on the quality. Which is just as well, since you won’t want to return anything.



Disney

It might seem obvious, but Disney has shopping sorted. The range of items available, the way they are displayed and quality is just right. Some items are unique to the resort or the attraction, making them seem extra special. You can even shop and have your purchases delivered – to your hotel or your home - and all with Disney’s trademark smiling good service.



High End Boutiques

If you’re a true shopaholic, you won’t want to miss the designer shopping of South Beach, Miami. Take a platinum card – preferably someone else’s!
