Golden Gate Bridge and National Recreation Area

For years, this architectural masterpiece has adorned posters and been featured in films and no trip to San Fran is completed without paying it a visit. Make a day out of it by hiring a bike and peddling the 1.7 miles from South San Fran to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. As you leave the city behind, you'll enter one of California's stunning national parks, full of endangered birds and mammoth redwood trees. It's the perfect place for a day of exploration.

Ride the cable cars

This is public transport with a difference. San Francisco is home to the world's last manually operated cable car system, so no trip to the city is completed with hopping on for a stop or two. Buy a day pass and you'll have the freedom to discover the entire city, which can be really useful for tackling those steep hills. If you find yourself falling in love with these rustic vehicles, you can even take a trip to the Cable Car Museum where you can learn their full history and see some original cable cars.

Fisherman's Wharf

Most San Fran itineraries include a stop a at Fisherman's Wharf – a true fisherman's paradise. Here you can see the large fishing boats coming in at the end of day, and enjoy the spoils of their labour at the many stalls and restaurants in the area. Head to Pier 39 to see an army of sea lions basking in the sun and enjoy some famous Californian clam chowder paired with the perfect home grown wine.

Alcatraz

Arguably the most infamous prison in the world, Alcatraz was once home to the most notorious prisoners such as Al Capone. The stark building is surrounded by lush greenery on an island a mile and half from Fisherman's Wharf. Take an Alcatraz cruise out to the island where you can do a tour of the prison and learn about some if most famous inhabitants. Be sure to book your tour well in advance.

Casinos

You can head to the casino as any time of the day in Vegas. If you love the thrill of gambling, you won't struggle to find somewhere to indulge in your passion. If gambling isn't your thing, the casinos are still worth a visit. Pitch up next to the penny slot machines and indulge in a free drink or two or take a stroll around the shops – most of the big casinos have their very own boutiques.

Big shows

The very best of Broadway, the world's best magicians and most celebrated performers have all made it onto the stages of Vegas. A show in Las Vegas is like no where else in the world, expect extravagant costumes, incredible sets and unimaginable scenes. This is glitz and glamour personified, whatever you choose to see, you won't be disappointed!

Epic adventures

The landscape of Las Vegas is vast and the opportunities endless, let's not foget, this is the middle of the desert! The Grand Canyon is close by, so a helicopter or hot air balloon tour is an excellent option. Or head to the less visited but equally beautiful Red Rock Canyon and enjoy one of the 19 marked hiking trails. If you'd rather horse than foot, they are plenty of tours available on horseback too.

Downtown Las Vegas

Take a step back from the strip to experience a more laid back style of Vegas. Here you'll find incredible food trucks, and a monthly festival called Vegas StrEATS which celebrates local art, music and delicacies. Downtown is also home to the Mob Museum where you can get an authentic view of a time when Vegas was run by one of the biggest crime organisations in the world.
