There is a ferry which takes you to the island which departs from Pier 33 from the port of San Francisco and boasts exceptional views of the city en route to the island.

The roads and walkways on Alcatraz are steep and the elevation between the dock and the cell house is equivalent to climbing a 13 story building. There are plenty of places to rest and take in the breath-taking views on the way to the top.
