The Panama Canal is man-made 48-mile waterway that runs through Panama, connecting the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. This stunning passage way was built in 1914 as a shortcut for ships allowing them to travel from the east to the west coast with ease. The Panama Canal is not so much of a destination, but an important gateway connecting Florida with Panama, Costa Rica, Mexico and beyond.

Puerta Limon is the countries most important port, and is a popular stop on a Panama Canal cruise. The area has fascinating architecture and beautiful open air market places where you can pick up traditional craft souvenirs, carved from wood. The area is a big cashew nut grower, so be sure to try cashew wine, which is considered to be a specialty. If you're lucky enough to be in Puerto Limon on or around Columbus Day, you'll experience the biggest event that this city has to offer. With days of wild parties, loud music and massive parades this is a fun time to be in Puerta Limon.

Then head back to Bocagrande to enjoy dinner and drinks on the beach at some of the funkiest bars and restaurants around.

Panama itself is the country which links Central and South America and it hugged by both the Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. The country is referred to as an isthmus – a narrow strip of land which connects two larger areas and has sea on either side. However this isthmus is more than just a passageway. Panama itself is home to rows of beaches and incredible rainforests where you can surf, snorkel, dive and zipline. Or you can head to Panama City for some serious shopping in the cosmopolitan centre.

The luscious greenery of Panama is visible on either side. You'll also witness the famously large Gatun Locks as they open and close to let the ships pass through. As you glide down the canal, you'll approach the expansive Gatun Lake and then exit through the other side where you'll carry on your journey on your Panama Canal Cruise.
