To stay inside the Disney bubble or venture beyond it? It’s one of the biggest decisions you’ll make when planning a
Walt Disney World holiday - and there’s a convincing argument for both.
Stay at a Disney Resort hotel, and you’ll wake up surrounded by Disney magic, ready to hop aboard complimentary transport to the parks and take advantage of exclusive benefits. Or stay off-site, and you could have an entire villa, your own swimming pool, and enough bedrooms to avoid Dad’s snoring – all within a short drive of theme parks.
The better choice depends on your budget, who you're travelling with, and what you want from your time in Orlando. Do you want to throw yourself into the Disney experience from morning until night, or would you rather have more space to spread out and a base for exploring everything else Florida has up its sleeve too?
To help you decide, we’re breaking down the perks of both options. But if all this talk of private pools and theme parks already has you packing mentally, explore our bespoke
Florida Theme Park Holidays and get ahead of the crowd today.
Reasons to Stay Off-Site in Orlando
You Get Much More Space
After 12 hours of non-stop theme park action, sometimes the most magical words in Orlando are: “I’m going to my own room.”
Space is one of the biggest reasons to stay off-site, particularly if you’re travelling as a a large group. Instead of squeezing everyone into suites - or booking several rooms - our Orlando villas give you a whole home with multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, shared living and dining areas, a full kitchen and, in many cases, the ultimate
Florida holiday perk: your own private swimming pool.
That extra space really comes into its own between park days. The kids can make a beeline for the pool, the adults can put their feet up, and everyone has room to recharge before doing it all over again tomorrow. No fighting over sun loungers, no coordinating who’s showering first and, crucially, no listening to someone else snoring (you know who they are).
For longer holidays especially, having somewhere you can unpack, spread out and properly settle into can make a huge difference. It’s not just somewhere to sleep at the end of the day; it becomes part of the holiday itself.
Your Holiday Doesn't Have to Revolve Around Disney
We love Disney, but Orlando has so much else going on.
If
Universal Orlando Resort,
SeaWorld Orlando, shopping trips, water parks and a few very large American dinners have also made it onto the itinerary, staying off-site gives you the freedom to dip in and out of them all. No need to worry about making the most of your Disney resort, you have the flexibility to explore in all directions from a base that’s close to your choice of attractions.
Villas Are Made for Family Holidays
Villas really come into their own when you’re travelling with grandparents, teenagers, another family or younger children with very different ideas about what constitutes bedtime. Everyone can have their own space but living rooms, dining areas and pools give you plenty of room to come back together.
Some of the loveliest
Florida holiday moments happen once you’re home from the parks. Ordering a takeaway, pouring a drink and sitting around your own pool while everyone debates the best ride of the day might not appear on the official itinerary, but we’d argue it deserves a spot.
You Have Your Own Kitchen
Nobody books a Florida holiday because they’re excited about access to a toaster. Give it a few days, though, and having your own kitchen starts to feel like quite the luxury.
You can stock the fridge with everyone’s favourite breakfasts, make a coffee before heading out, keep snacks on hand for perpetually hungry children and have dinner at home whenever another restaurant reservation feels like more effort than fun.
It’s particularly handy on those early theme park mornings when you’d rather be heading towards the rides than waiting for the breakfast bill.
And, of course, having a kitchen doesn’t mean you actually have to cook. You are on holiday, after all. Orlando has thousands of places to eat, so you can save your restaurant budget - and appetite - for the ones you really want to try.
Value for Money
When you’re travelling as a family or larger group, it’s worth looking at what you’re actually getting for the price rather than comparing room rates alone.
Booking several hotel rooms can quickly add up, while a villa can accommodate everyone under one roof for a fantastic price. In fact, when you look at the per person cost for large villas, you can often afford a luxury property for a price of an entry level Disney hotel.
Of course, prices vary depending on when you travel, where you stay and the size of your group, and you’ll also need to consider transport if you’re staying away from the parks. But a villa can give you an awful lot of holiday for your money.
Reasons to Stay On-Site at Walt Disney World
Of course, there is a reason so many families dream of staying at
Walt Disney World. If you want to squeeze as much magic into your holiday as possible, staying on-site comes with all the perks.
You Can Enter the Parks Earlier
This is a big one.
Guests staying at
Disney Resort hotels, along with guests at other select participating hotels, can currently enter all four Walt Disney World theme parks 30 minutes before they officially open.
That means you could already be making your way towards a must-do attraction while other guests are still waiting for the gates to open. If you’re like us, you have a ride wish list as long as the flight to Florida, so that extra half-hour can be put to very good use.
Guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts, Disney Deluxe Villa Resorts and certain other select hotels can get even more park time with Extended Evening Theme Park Hours on eligible nights at selected parks. Staying up past bedtime is practically compulsory at Disney anyway.
Disney Transport Does the Driving
After a day that has involved 20,000 steps, several rollercoasters and at least one child insisting they’re definitely not tired, getting behind the wheel probably isn’t top of anyone’s wishlist.
Walt Disney World is roughly the size of San Francisco, so where you base yourself can make a noticeable difference to your day.
Stay at a Disney Resort hotel and complimentary transport connects you with the theme parks, water parks and Disney Springs. Depending on where you’re staying and where you’re heading, that could mean hopping aboard a Disney bus, gliding through the sky on the Disney Skyliner, catching the monorail or even travelling by boat.
Some resorts are close enough to certain parks that you can walk.
A midday break suddenly feels much more achievable when “home” isn’t very far away.
And there’s something particularly satisfying about leaving the parks after the fireworks, climbing aboard your transport and letting Disney take care of getting you home.
Your Resort Alone is a Fairytale
If this is the Disney trip your family has been talking about for years, staying on-site lets you go all in.
Disney Resort hotels are experiences in their own right, with themed pools, restaurants and details that carry the storytelling beyond the parks. Depending on the resort you choose, you could wake up surrounded by larger-than-life Disney characters, stay somewhere inspired by an African savanna or opt for something altogether more understated and luxurious.
It means leaving
Magic Kingdom at the end of the night doesn’t necessarily mean leaving Disney behind. For families who want to spend a week or two happily inside the Disney bubble, that can be a very big part of the appeal.
You Get Earlier Access to Lightning Lane Planning
For families who plan to purchase Lightning Lane passes, staying on-site currently comes with another useful advantage.
Guests at Disney Resort hotels and other select hotels can purchase and plan eligible Lightning Lane passes seven days before the first day of their stay, for the length of their stay. Other guests can generally begin planning three days before their park visit.
If ticking off the most popular attractions is high on your priority list, that extra planning window is worth knowing about.
How to Decide Between On-Site and Off-Site
So, Disney bubble or villa life?
Think less about which option is supposedly “better” and more about what you want your Florida holiday to look like.
If you’re planning to spend most of your time at Walt Disney World, love the idea of being completely immersed in Disney and know you’ll make good use of perks like Early Theme Park Entry and complimentary transport, staying on-site could be exactly what you’re looking for.
But if your Orlando wishlist extends well beyond Disney, you’re travelling with a larger family or you simply like the idea of having bedrooms, living space, a kitchen and your own pool to come home to, villa life has plenty going for it.
And, in true “why choose?” fashion, you can always do both.
A multi-centre holiday lets you spend a few nights firmly inside the Disney bubble before moving to a villa for the rest of your holiday. Make the most of those on-site Disney perks first, then unpack, spread out and turn your attention to Universal, shopping, other Orlando attractions and some very well-earned pool time.
Ultimately, there isn’t one right way to do Orlando. Some families want Mickey waffles for breakfast and Cinderella Castle on their doorstep. Others want coffee beside their own pool before deciding which corner of Orlando to tackle next. We can see the appeal of both.
