If you've come looking for Dorothy and her red shoes, you won't find them here. What you will find though is a place where the skies are so big they go on forever and the sweeping prairies roll endlessly away into the distance. This is the very heart of America, a place to soothe the soul of the most jaded of city dwellers, and where the spirit of the Old West still hangs in the air.
A big part of Kansas holidays is about getting in touch with America's past. This is the State where pioneers forged a path west along the Santa Fe Trail and where cowboys drove longhorn cattle north. It's also the home of Dodge City, the cradle of the Great Plains and the site of hard-fought battles between settlers and Native American tribes. It's almost a living, breathing Western movie.
And you can see all that still. A visit to Council Grove reveals age-old wagon ruts along the path of the Santa Fe trail. In the Flint Hills you can walk among some of the USA's last remaining Tallgrass prairies. In Wichita, the Old Cowtown Museum recreates life as it was lived here in the 1870s. There's some fascinating Native American museums and monuments to visit. And Dodge City is alive and kicking to this day - although the saloons and gunslingers have gone.
One of the loveliest things about holidays in Kansas is that you can drive for miles on quiet roads, just drinking in the scenery and nodding to local farmers as they pass by. You can explore towns where time seems to have stood still, enjoy succulent beef from a local ranch and hang out at the rodeo. And if you must have an Oz fix, there's the Oz Museum in Wamego.
