The cultural and artistic scene here reaches into every walk of life - no wonder they call it the Creative City. If you're visiting in autumn, look out for the planet's biggest Halloween street party, the West Hollywood Carnaval (yes, it's spelled that way). On October 31st half a million revellers take to the streets on Santa Monic Boulevard to celebrate to true Hollywood-style excess, complete with wild costumes and a total loss of inhibition. What a giggle. 

Early June sees one of the world's greatest and first ever Pride festivals, a 3 day merry go round of celebration first held in 1970 on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots. Brighton Pride has nothing on this! The West Coast gay liberation movement is still going strong and Pride has been held in West Hollywood ever since, the jewel in its wonderfully tolerant crown.  

Shop ‘til you drop  

Shopaholic? Designers, artisans and fashion icons gather here, a place recognised the world over for excellence and innovation in interior design, haute couture and streetwear. Visit the Pacific Design Center, respected all over the world for it’s exclusive designer goods.

Head for Fountain Avenue, Harper Avenue and Havenhurst Drive for a dense concentration of gorgeously outrageous 1920s Deco and Spanish revival apartments, homes of the stars. Wow. After a day of sightseeing, why not head to the Troubador nightclub, one of the best ever rock clubs according to Rolling Stone magazine.
