Universal Studios Hollywood
Home to one of the oldest working film studios in Hollywood, Universal Studios is also one of California’s best and most popular theme parks. Its World-Famous Studio Tour gives a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s busiest movie and television production lots, with thrilling and immersive rides that are truly unforgettable.
The park boasts 10 incredible lands, including the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Universal CityWalk, Jurassic World and the latest instalment, SUPER NINTENDO WORLD™. Step into the Mushroom Kingdom and explore interactive areas using your Power-Up Band™ and race your family on the Mario Kart™: Bowser’s Challenge ride!
Disneyland
It would be remiss to go on multi-centre holidays in California and not spend a day at the original Disney theme park, not to mention the most Instagrammed location on the planet. Located in Anaheim, on the outskirts of LA, this iconic park opened in 1955 and still welcomes around 18 million visitors per year.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy a couple of days of exploring the park’s classic attractions like ‘It’s a Small World’, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and the ‘Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’, as well as the newly opened headliner attraction in 2023: ‘Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway’, which is located in the reimagined Mickey’s Toontown area.
Griffith Observatory
This family-friendly facility sits high above LA on Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, with stellar views of the city below, the Hollywood Sign, and out to the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can peek through telescopes, explore superb exhibits, and see memorable live presentations at the Samuel Oschin Planetarium to learn all about the cosmos. Leonard Nimoy even has a theatre named after him and narrates one of the short films about the history of the observatory!
Nighttime visits are highly recommended, too, with numerous telescopes out on the lawn and the roof for you to observe the fascinating night sky. And with free admission, this is a must-visit attraction on Los Angeles twin-centre holidays.
Hollywood Sign
Not only an LA landmark but a global cultural icon, the famous 50-foot-tall white letters of the Hollywood Sign are a sight worth seeing when embarking on multi-centre holidays, Los Angeles style. Overlooking the city atop Mount Lee in Griffith Park amid the Santa Monica Mountains, this much-loved attraction celebrated its 100th year in 2023 and remains a firm fixture in LA.
There are multiple places to get a decent view and on a clear day it is visible across the whole Los Angeles Basin. From downtown, head to the Hollywood & Highland Center shopping complex, and by car take a scenic journey up Mulholland Drive for a glimpse.
But for a real close-up view, you will need to hike. Griffith Park features several challenging trails that are accessible all-year-round, it may be tough but it’s totally worth your efforts. Horseback tours and helicopter rides also offer excellent once-in-a-lifetime experiences!
Santa Monica State Beach
One of the top beaches in the whole state, the celebrated Santa Monica State Beach is set to the west of Downtown LA and typifies laid-back California soul with its endless sands, picturesque surf, and multitude of fun things to do. Santa Monica Pier is its focal point, with the iconic Ferris Wheel, aquarium, and fairground attractions to entertain all day and night.
Luxury hotels fringe the beach as well as stylish restaurants and high-end shops, making it a great Los Angeles multi-centre holiday destination. And, if you’re feeling strong, along the Ocean Front Walk is Muscle Beach – the original birthplace of the infamous 1930s outdoor gym area – with its parallel bars, ropes, rings, and swings. Whether you’re a fitness fanatic or not, it’s a cool place to people-watch and absorb the positive vibes.
Venice Beach
Venice Beach – often simply called Venice – is like Santa Monica’s quirky sister, with a bohemian vibe and colourful characters performing music, miming, or juggling along its buzzing oceanfront boardwalk. There’s so much going on here you won’t know where to look. Watch friendly basketball games break out, skaters trying out their latest tricks and rollerbladers weaving in and out of pedestrians in a flurry of sound and colour.
Venice is also home to its own Muscle Beach, made famous by the gym of the same name and its celebrity clientele, most notably former bodybuilder, actor and California Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Zuma Beach
Well positioned off the East Pacific Coast Highway and right next to the cool beach town of Malibu, Zuma Beach boasts some of California’s most beautiful wide sands and mild surf. The waters are a little chillier here and prone to riptides, but the beach remains one of the most popular in the area and is ideal for wind surfing. With lifeguards aplenty, it’s also a safe beach and ideal for families with young kids who want to swim, boogie board and paddle.
Stretching for almost two miles, Zuma Beach has great facilities to keep you occupied all day, including volleyball nets if you fancy trying your hand at a classic California beach activity, plus there are several restaurants nearby so you can really make a day of it.
El Matador State Beach
Perhaps one of California’s most striking beaches, but more challenging to access with a steep rocky pathway and flight of stairs, El Matador is one of three gorgeous expanses of sand set within Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach.
This western Malibu beach is a photographer’s dream, with craggy cliffs, unique rock formations and indescribable sunsets, offering the perfect backdrop for taking snapshots on California multi-centre holidays. And while swimming and surfing isn’t advised, visitors can enjoy the shimmering rock pools during low tide, which house a plethora of marine life like anemones, starfish, and hermit crabs.
Rodeo Drive
Shopping is part of the Los Angeles DNA, and there’s no other place for it that embodies the jet-set Hollywood lifestyle than Rodeo Drive. This two-mile-long street in Beverly Hills is known for being one of the most expensive and exclusive shopping streets in the world, characterised by its ultra-high-end boutique stores such as Bulgari, Cartier, Valentino, Fendi and dozens more.
Alongside the famous retail stores are heaps of great spots to eat, including coffee shops and juice bars, delis, bakeries, and restaurants. If you only visit Rodeo Drive to window shop and do some celebrity spotting, it’s still a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a great way to spend a few hours.
The Grove
There are numerous excellent malls and shopping centres in Los Angeles, but The Grove in West Hollywood is a stand-out destination for locals and tourists alike. Positioned as a one-stop place for shopping, dining and entertainment with a huge 14-screen AMC movie theatre, The Grove teems with people day and night.
The animated music fountains at its centre are a popular hangout spot for the younger crowd, while older patrons are happy scouring the diverse retail stores like Nike, Apple, and Banana Republic. And its wide selection of open-air restaurants means everyone can sit and watch the world go by under the warm LA sun.
The Original Farmers Market
Adjacent to The Grove is the fabulous Original Farmers Market, a huge open-air marketplace that’s been going strong since 1934, with over 100 vendors selling home-grown produce and specialty and gourmet foods. It’s a great place to browse the vibrant food stalls and sit down for a meal to absorb the sociable ambience with the locals.
The market also plays host to loads of exciting events throughout the year including Mardi Gras, fall festivals, Christmas festivities and Friday-night music concerts in the summer. There’s always something going on and for a true taste of everyday LA life, this is the place to visit!
Abbot Kinney Boulevard
One of the most-loved streets in Venice famed for its fashion, art and food, Abbot Kinney Boulevard is a mile-long strip of the coolest shops in town, with new boutiques, coffee shops, and eateries popping up all the time. What was once a sleepy little boulevard is now the most happening shopping haven around and its laid-back Venice Beach mood gives it an edgier, artsy vibe.
Consider a morning stroll down the boulevard, nipping in and out of a few quirky clothing stores, stopping for a quick coffee and spot of lunch before heading over to Venice Beach for an afternoon of sun, sand, and sea. Los Angeles multi-centre holidays don’t get much more chilled out than this!
Griffith Park
One of the USA’s largest municipal parks with urban wilderness, Griffith Park is situated in the eastern Santa Monica Mountains and covers more than 4,200 acres with natural shrubland, landscaped parkland and various picnic areas. It’s one of the top family destinations in the city and features a merry-go-round, trails for walking and hiking, pony rides, a miniature train ride, playgrounds, swimming pool and so much more. Golfers will enjoy the two excellent courses within the park, while keen riders can traverse the park on horseback – all-American style!
Since 2019, Griffith Park is even easier to access due to the convenient Griffith Parkline bus transportation service, which runs from midday until 10pm at the weekend and allows passengers to hop on and off at various locations and top attractions around the city, including the Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory and the Los Angeles Zoo. Consider visiting on a Saturday or Sunday to take advantage of this brilliant service!
Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens
For a peaceful change of pace from LA’s buzzing energy, visit the Huntington Library, Art Museum, and Botanical Gardens in the San Marino district. Taking out library books may not be high on your holiday agenda, but it’s still a lovely place to explore, together with the stunning art collection, which holds notable works by Gainsborough, Blake, and Turner.
Outside boasts the most impressive botanical gardens in the Los Angeles region, with more than half of its 207 acres open to the public. The gardens are split into varying themes including the century-old Desert Garden with cacti and succulents galore, the Shakespeare Garden with a quintessentially English vibe, the enchanting Children’s Garden, and the serene Japanese Garden.
Runyon Canyon Park
The 160-acre Runyon Canyon Park is set right in Hollywood at the eastern end of the Santa Monica Mountains, and if keeping fit is a crucial element of your multi-centre holidays in Los Angeles, this conveniently placed park is the ideal place to let off some steam.
The park is said to be the home of the best hiking in the city and boasts a few challenging trails that afford spectacular sweeping views, which include the Hollywood Sign and across the LA Basin. Be mindful that it does get busy on the trails with both locals and tourists; many celebrities are known to walk their dogs here or just come for some exercise, so you may get to do some star-spotting too!
Topanga State Park
Topanga State Park Topanga State Park is another glorious section of cliffs and canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains, featuring 36 miles of trails amid open parkland and towering oak trees, with a bonus Pacific Ocean vista. The trails are perfect for mountain bikes, horse riders and hikers who want to take in its magnificent scenery, while geology fans will enjoy the park’s many topographical aspects including earthquake faults, marine fossils, and intriguing rock formations.
Tacos
If there was ever a food to represent a city more than the taco for Los Angeles, we are yet to see it. Easily the most popular food in Southern California, tacos are part of everyday life here. From the world-class Mexican restaurants in Hollywood to the gourmet taco food trucks popping up all over the city – the LA taco scene is huge.
You’ve got your classic corn tortilla filled with ground beef, salsa, lettuce, tomatoes, grated cheese, and sour cream, or you could go wild and try a thousand exciting variations using shrimp, marinated pork, scallops or even octopus! Top-rated eateries to get your hands on some of this delicious grub include Leo’s Taco Truck (particularly its La Brea location), Mariscos Jalisco food truck, and Tire Shop Taquería, which after one bite will transport you instantly to a balmy night in Tijuana.
Korean Food
Los Angeles is home to the largest Korean population in the US (and outside of Korea itself), with more than 500 restaurants alone in its aptly named Koreatown neighbourhood, which covers 3 square miles. More than just barbecue food, LA’s Korean cuisine is exceptional and varied, so much so that visitors from Seoul are amazed at the quality and quantity of food on offer.
A night out dining on KBBQ is a worthwhile event by itself, with sizzling tabletop displays, curious side dishes and an electric atmosphere. And if you plan on eating your way round Los Angeles on multi-centre holidays, Korean food is a must-try. Check out local favourites like ‘Park’s BBQ’, ‘Kang Ho Dong Baekjeong’, and ‘Soban’ restaurant for a helping of stellar seafood dishes.
French Dip Sandwich
The name alone sounds appetising, and this LA favourite truly is. Thought to have been invented in the city during the early 1900s, a French Dip Sandwich comprises a crusty, toasted baguette filled with meat – usually thin slices of roast beef – and melted cheese, along with a side bowl of beef stock (or au jus, ‘with broth’ in French) to dip it in, which is garnered from the cooking process.
‘The Original Philippe’ classes itself as the home of the French Dip Sandwich and has been serving them since 1908 for both eat-in and takeout dining, garnished with flavoursome extras such as tangy coleslaw, home-cooked potato salads, pickled eggs and spicy yellow chili peppers.
If your stomach is rumbling at the thought of this incredible sandwich, make a note to stop off and sample one on your future Los Angeles twin-centre holidays!
Strawberry Doughnuts
Another of LA’s must-try foods is the humble but oh-so-special strawberry doughnut. Located in Glendora on the famous Route 66, ‘The Donut Man’ restaurant is a fair distance from downtown but has earned cult-like status for its original take on this sweet treat and is worth the trip.
Owners Jim and Miyoko Nakano epitomised the American dream and in the 1980s opened their own doughnut shop. After a crop of surplus strawberries, Jim used them to elevate his doughnuts to new heights, birthing the legendary dish we see today. In 2020 The Donut Man opened its doors in a second location in the Grand Central Market in downtown Los Angeles, delivering the same great handmade freshness in the heart of the city!
Los Angeles FAQs
Los Angeles FAQs
Los Angeles FAQs
Absolutely. California is a vast and diverse state with much to offer, and Los Angeles is just the start. Domestic flights between major cities are frequent and are a great option for time-conscious travellers, while driving some of the world’s most scenic coastal roads is also a wonderful way in which to explore the state.
Think about blending your Los Angeles trip with the chilled-out Cali vibes of San Francisco to the north, the desert playground of Las Vegas across the border in Nevada or jet across to Hawaii for a splash of Pacific paradise.
Los Angeles boasts enviable year-round sunshine and a climate similar to that of the Mediterranean. If you love the heat, then June to September will be your best time to visit as temperatures average at about 22°C and up to 28°C in August. January is the wettest month of the year and springtime delivers cooler weather, but it is still warm and pleasant.
The city is located on California’s Pacific coastline and is 8 hours behind the UK. Flights usually take just over 11 hours to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), with many direct options available with British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and United Airlines from London, while in-direct flights from Manchester with American Airlines are also available.
Los Angeles is a city of cars; it’s a big place and almost everybody drives, and if you want to explore the city at your own pace then it’s a good option. However, parking isn’t always easy to find, and it can be expensive so bear those extra costs in mind.
If your itinerary centres around the most popular tourist attractions then consider using LA’s extensive transportation system, which includes buses, subways, and trains. It will be much more cost-effective but may not always be the most convenient method so we advise researching your potential routes and planning ahead!
