They call Arizona 'The Grand Canyon State'....which kind of focuses all the attention in one little corner and ignores all the other wonderful things about it. Yes, the Grand Canyon is a must-see sight if you're ever compiling a bucket list. But this is a big state, with lots of other unmissable places to go and memorable things to see. And it all happens under a blanket of warm sunshine, making Arizona holidays a hit all year round.
If you've ever wanted to see those classic desert landscapes of red rock canyons and giant cacti silhouetted against a blazing sun, this is the place to do it. The Sonoran Desert spreads its fiery fingers over much of the state, and makes for some stunning landscapes. You can take jeep trips across endless plateaus studded with striking rock formations; hike the trails up into the mountains; explore caverns; discover the lakes along the Apache Trail; or take a bird's eye view of everything from a hot air balloon.
But there's sophistication in the heart of the desert too, with three major cities - two of which, Phoenix and Scottsdale, are right next-door to each other. Tucson retains some of the spirit of the Old West and is home to the amazing Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, plus fantastic Mexican food; Phoenix has everything you'd expect of a bustling state capital, including great culture and the must-see American Indian Heard Museum; and Scottsdale pulses with some of the best shopping and night-life you'll find anywhere.
Other highlights of Arizona holidays include easy access to an endless swathe of emerald green golf courses, and some superb spas where you can book a treatment, lie back, and relax. So not only do Arizona holidays make you feel good - they can make you look good too!

You can buy anything from Native American jewellery and cowboy boots to fine art and designer labels in Arizona. Scottsdale is well-known as a retail Mecca, and has both high-end fashion and flagship stores at its famous Fashion Square, as well as high street names at its other malls. Art lovers should head to the galleries of the Marshall Way Arts District.
Anyone who likes to work on their swing will be spoilt for choice. This may be the desert, but there's over 200 courses in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area alone - so there's no reason why you shouldn't go home with an improved handicap. Many of the courses have spectacular settings, with the desert providing a stunning backdrop.
From art to aeroplanes, there's plenty to keep you interested on Arizona holidays. Scottsdale has the fantastic Museum of Modern Art; Tucson has the Pima Air and Space Museum, as well as the astonishing 'boneyard of 4000 abandoned planes on the US Air Force base next door; while Phoenix's must-see destination is the captivating Heard Museum, devoted to Native American culture and history.
Getting out into the desert, whether it's by car, on foot, or on horseback, is essential. There's fantastic landscapes to savour, especially at sunset, and getting your picture taken next to a giant saguaro cactus is a must. Visit in the springtime and you'll see the terrain transformed by a blanket of colourful wildflowers.
Superb restaurants, great bars, inspiring performing arts and a buzzing club scene are all part of the deal here. Tucson's blend of Mexican and classic Southwest food is legendary; Phoenix has top notch ballet, opera and theatre, including Broadway hits; and anyone who likes to dance and drink the night away should hit the happening bars and clubs of Scottsdale.
