Unlocking the Florida Keys: 9 Things to Do for Every Interest
At the southernmost part of the US, along 120 miles of Atlantic Ocean coastline, you'll find none other than the majestic Florida Keys.
Here, the beaches are closer to Cuba than Miami. So, if you've been dreaming of azure waters, swaying palm trees, and a vibrant tropical paradise - this is the place for you.
The Florida Keys is also known for its unique charm and a treasure trove of attractions, as each island brings something special for its visitors. From the laid-back island vibes of Key West to the pristine beaches of Key Largo, you can be sure to create endless sun-filled memories.
What’s more, our dedicated team is here to help you curate the perfect Florida Keys holiday experience, no matter the size of your travel party or budget.
First, let's dive into what’s on offer in the captivating world of the Florida Keys, to give you a better idea of what you want from our bespoke holiday packages.
Sombrero Beach
Just like the name suggests, you might benefit from pulling out your sunhat on Sombrero Beach. Named in 2023 as one of the Best Beaches in the USA, this beach is sure to impress. This white sand arc has been restored to perfection after Hurricane Irma in 2017, with amenities such as grills, picnic tables, a playground, and more. No wonder it's a local favourite!
Bahia Honda State Park
If you'd like to see what lies beneath the waters, Bahia Honda State Park is a winner. Coined as "a piece of Caribbean" by Dr Beach, its white sandy shore, and clear blue shallow waters, make it the perfect place for snorkelling lovers. Stretching as far as 500 acres, expect to see picturesque views of palm trees from the beach or by kayaking across the calm waters.
Cannon Beach
Cannon Beach located in Key Largo is a popular tourist spot and for good reason. Swimmers can see the famous 1715 Spanish shipwreck with its anchor, along with cannons long engulfed by marine life. If that wasn't enough, you can also spot the "Christ of the Deep" statue within the waters in a glass bottom boat or during a snorkelling session. Now, if that doesn't make it into the holiday highlights, we're not sure what will!
Smathers Beach
Known as one of the biggest beaches public beach in Key West, Smathers Beach is perfect for families or couples looking for a little adventure. Here, you can enjoy sunset water sports activities, ranging from parasailing to Hobie Cat rentals, before digging into a delicious meal from the food trucks lined across the beach.
Theatre of the Sea
Get up close and personal with the marine mammal kingdom inside the Theatre of The Sea. It’s the ideal way to take the family on a showstopping adventure, as you witness performances from dolphins, sea lions, and parrots. For those wanting a closer encounter, opt for the swim with dolphin experience - a truly memorable way to explore the Florida Keys.
Eco Safari Tour
For a more laid-back experience, an Eco Safari Tour of Key West is the way to go. Hop into your own private boat and let your tour guide show you all the hidden and best spots of the Keys. From sailing through the downwind trails of the mangrove islands to feasting your eyes on a famous Key West sunset.
Curry Hammock State Park
The untouched sanctuary of Curry Hammock State Park is the perfect place for lovers of nature. Known as the largest undeveloped land near Key Largo, it is home to a variety of tropical wildlife. We recommend perching yourself on the picnic tables for an afternoon snack or taking a swim in the pool, surrounded by the natural beauty.
Biscayne National Park
For a more educational experience, Biscayne National Park delivers. You can partake in different programs that transport you on a historical journey through our ecosystems. The best part is 95% of the park is underwater, so you'll be able to explore this breathtaking coral reef by boat.
Mangrove Trails
Step right into the heart of the mangrove tunnels as you hike along the Mangrove Trails. Considered a relatively easy route for those new to hiking, you can witness a range of wildlife and flowers here. Better, the boardwalk is wheelchair-accessible and takes you right into the heart of a mangrove forest. For some, it’s also a great activity to combine with renting a boat out to the Florida Reef.
Florida Keys Holidays 2025 & 2026
Florida Keys Holidays 2025 & 2026
Florida Keys Holidays 2025 & 2026
Great for island hopping, this destination is popular with fly drive holidaymakers because of the excellent road trips you can experience. Soar across the Overseas Highway which provides easy access to most of these islands. If you’re looking at a fly drive then you’ll be gob-smacked with the fantastic journey between Miami and Key West; the drive is approximately three hours as you speed down the Overseas Highway in your choice of car, from RVs to convertibles.
Even if visiting on foot, the Keys offer a lot as you’ll have beautiful islands like Duck Key, Key Largo, and Key West to explore while having the privileged weather and vistas of the incredible Mexican Gulf.
Islamorada
There are plenty of reasons to enjoy a visit to the gorgeous isles of Islamorada, what with it scoring titles like the ‘village of islands’, or the ‘sport fishing capital of the world’. Anglers will be over the moon with the latter title, as if you’re looking to do some fishing in Florida then this area guarantees you the best experience possible.
Family-friendly activities are bursting from these isles too, including shipwreck trails to follow, feeding tarpon at Robbie’s Marina, or simply having a picnic at Anne’s or Library Beach. There’s even the Theatre of the Sea to enjoy some live music or a show featuring dolphins and sea lions.
Duck Key
The family fun doesn’t stop over in Duck Key, as here you can get up to all sorts of shenanigans. Swim with dolphins, take up water sports, scuba dive and see the beautiful coral reefs, or even rent a boat and take to the seas. Anglers can get their fix at Tailwalker Sportfishing-Day Adventures or I’m Hooked Fishing Charters, if anyone fancies a more relaxing pastime. Of course, you can always hit up the beautiful beaches to laze the days away too.
Dry Tortugas National Park
The Dry Tortugas National Park is a cluster of seven islands just off the southernmost point of the USA. Parading on and around the island you’ll be privileged with meeting the amazing marine and bird life of the Tortugas, from dolphins and sharks to sea turtles. Take a seaplane, ferry or private sail journey from Key West and you can see it all from a great vantage point either from the skies or topside.
John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park
The Florida Keys boast some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, so why not see it all from beneath the tide? Offering roughly 70 nautical square miles of park space, the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park gives you and your family the chance to go sub-nautical and check out the reefs in the best way possible. Get up-close and personal with artefacts and reefs way down in the deep, or if you’re a landlubber you may prefer taking a glass-bottom boat tour, a canoe or kayak throughout the park’s seas.
Bahia Honda State Park
Bahia Honda State Park is home to a historic icon of the Keys, the Overseas Railroad Bridge, which originally connected the islands before it was destroyed by the Labor Day Hurricane in 1935. Take the family out for a day of snorkelling and catching the gorgeous reefs, then trek the land to see some rare flora including yellow satinwood and Florida silver palm. Nature trails and bicycle routes are riddled throughout the shore, and other leisure activities like kayaking make for a perfect pastime during your visit to this beautiful state park.
Everglades
Perhaps one of the most unique regions in the world, Florida’s Everglades sits just above the Keys and is an incredible area that you simply cannot miss. Tropically floral and foliaged landscapes surround meandering lagoons which you can see by airboat, with the Everglades State Park staff showing you the best spots in the land. Look out for alligators and wildlife in their natural habitat and take in the beautiful nature of this wonderful region of the world.
