Perched along Florida's Gulf Coast, south of Tampa, lies the Sunshine State's best-kept secret. Turquoise shores line Anna Maria Island, a barrier island on the Gulf of Mexico. A dreamy 7-mile strip of sugar-sand beaches, pure blue waters, and tropical palm trees.

Slow island living enhances Anna Maria Island's tranquil atmosphere. With a speed limit of just 35 mph, no one is rushing in this peaceful paradise. Likened to a 1950s beach town, strict regulations govern the island’s ice-cream-coloured buildings including a ban on high-rise structures - ensuring its nostalgic charm remains intact.

When Should I Visit Anna Maria Island?

For mild weather and clear blue skies, the best time to visit is between October and February and May through August. During these months, you can expect pleasant daytime highs of 21–24°C and cooler evenings around 10–15°C. This period also brings fewer crowds, making it ideal for a more relaxed and peaceful getaway.

While December isn’t part of the summer rush, it’s still a popular travel month, as visitors trade chilly winter weather for a balmy, island-style Christmas.

If you're drawn to nature experiences, there's truly no bad time for an Anna Maria Island holiday. Bottlenose dolphins feed in the shallow waters year-round, and you can book small group boat tours to see them up close in their natural habitat.

From May to October, keep an eye out for Loggerhead and Green sea turtles too during their nesting season. This is when the beaches come alive with increased turtle activity, offering a unique opportunity to witness a special part of the island’s ecosystem.

Top Tip: Book your accommodation ASAP. Hotspots like beachfront properties, especially for large groups, tend to fill up quickly on Anna Maria Island.

What Are Anna Maria Island's Best Locations?

While this idyllic islet is small, there is surprisingly much to see. We recommend starting in the north of the island before making your way south toward its more remote and serene escapes.

The charming beach town of Anna Maria Island exudes a relaxed ambience. Its population of just 1,800 residents has perfected the art of laid-back island living, a lifestyle that visitors in need of a well-deserved break quickly adopt.

To witness the island’s relaxed charm, head to Pine Avenue, the heart of this mellow village. Also known as the “Greenest Little Main Street in America”, it is one in only 100 places worldwide to reach platinum LEED certification. This means that the area is using as little energy as possible by maximising the natural resources of Florida. Pastel reclaimed wooden structures line the street, preserved to retain the island's nostalgic aesthetic. Take your time exploring the independent shops and eateries - there’s a huge local scene in Anna Maria Island. The community likes to keep things local to retain its authentic vibe, so you’ll be hard-pressed to find a chain here.

Just around the corner, Bean Point - the island’s northernmost beach - is a treasure trove for shell collectors and sunset seekers.

If you’re up for a bit of culture, check out the Anna Maria Island Historical Society Museum. The building was constructed in 1920 as an icehouse. It went on to serve as an automotive garage, a sea turtle hatchery, and a public administration building. In 1992, the City of Anna Maria began leasing the building to the Historical Society for use as a museum.

Another one for the history buffs, Anna Maria Island’s Old Jail is a popular attraction, known for its outdoor structure that once housed local rowdy partygoers. You can view its open jails, featuring no glass windows or doors – and thankfully no more inmates.

In the centre of the island lies Holmes Beach, the main entry point to Anna Maria Island. Don’t miss Manatee Beach, where sugar-white sand meets turquoise waters. After a swim, head to Anna Maria Island Beach Cafe for fresh seafood and tropical cocktails at the tiki bar. Or, if you’re all in, hop aboard a family-friendly fishing charter to explore sandbars, reel in local fish, and learn more about marine life.

Further south, Bradenton Beach hums with local charm. Here, you can dine at top seafood eateries and shop for souvenir art along Historic Bridge Street or spend a day at Coquina Beach, where tiny butterfly-shaped coquina shells dot the shore. Then, challenge the kids to mini golf at The Fish Hole, or surrender to serenity with a beachfront massage at Sea-renity Spa. The ocean view does the rest. Finally, take a peaceful stroll along the Mangrove Walk at Leffis Key Preserve, once a favourite picnic spot for early island settlers back in the early 1900s - and one of our favourite spots for watching the sun set today.

Road Trip to Orlando?

Spanning a mere 126 miles, the road trip to Orlando is doable in around 2 hours. And many of our customers love combining lazy island days with high-octane entertainment.

We can even give you the keys to Florida with comprehensive car hire cover. After picking up your rental car on the island, take US-41, then merge onto the I-75 motorway. It’s practically a straight run from there.

The nearest airport is Sarasota–Bradenton International Airport (SRQ), about a 30-minute drive from the island. From SRQ, flights to Orlando International Airport (MCO) typically take around 55 minutes. Alternatively, you can also fly direct on Virgin Atlantic and British Airways to Tampa International  Airport (TPA), located a 1-hour drive away.

Given the logistics of air travel and the waiting time involved, a road trip is still typically more time-efficient and, in our experience, a lot more fun. The real time investment is planning the perfect music playlist!
