Beyond the gates of Walt Disney World and the pastel palette of Miami, there are plenty of Floridian treasures to uncover. Whether you’re craving those postcard white sands and azure waters or looking to indulge your culture vulture at historical sites, we know a place. Florida’s lesser-known destinations still offer an unforgettable holiday experience, and our Travel Experts can show you all sides of the Sunshine State...
Cocoa Beach
Sun, sea, sand, and so much more, Cocoa Beach is a hidden gem with a unique sparkle. Known as a surfer’s paradise, it offers consistent waves as well as the world’s largest surf shop, Ron Jon Surf Shop. Next, head downtown to the charming Cocoa Village, lined with antique stores, art galleries, and gourmet food shops it has plenty to get onboard with.
Plus, Cocoa Beach’s proximity to Kennedy Space Center is a big bonus for any budding astronauts in the family. Here, you can experience the story of NASA through a mix of exhibits, Imax shows, and if you’re lucky, even witness a rocket launch!
Another place you won’t want to miss is the Dinosaur Store and Museum. Filled with fossil collections, dinosaur skeletons, and lifelike models, it will transport you back to the age of the dinosaurs. Be sure to stop by the museum’s Adventure Zone, full of science stations and arcade games made for family fun.
Amelia Island
Uncover a blend of Island vibes, history and culture, and a host of foodie havens at Amelia Island. The island is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Florida, making it a great location for those looking to put their feet up on holiday. We love grabbing a sun lounger and enjoying endless views of sapphire waters and snow-white sand here.
But this pristine coastline isn’t just a pretty picture, there are also lots of amenities on offer. Whether you’re after a grab-and-go snack, a hearty meal, or a local shrimp delicacy, there is a plethora of eateries. And once you’re fuelled up, we recommend venturing downtown, where boutiques and galleries line the Victorian-era streets.
While Amelia Island is a dream destination at any time of the year, time your visit just right, and you can enjoy the island’s annual festivals, such as Fernandina Beach Songwriters Festival and the signature Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival – a celebration of all things shrimp.
Anna Maria Island
One of our favourite Sunshine State destinations, Anna Maria Island encapsulates it all – old Florida charm, pristine landscapes, and abundant wildlife. If you’re looking to stake your claim on pure white sand prime property, the island has six stunning beaches to choose from - Coquina Beach, Manatee Beach, Bradenton Beach, Holmes Beach, Cortez Beach, and Anna Maria Beach. After adding a little sun glow to the skin, wander on down to the quaint, pedestrian-friendly streets, lined with local shops, cafes, and art galleries, making it a refreshing escape from the more tourist-heavy areas.
And if you’re looking to soak up the stunning natural settings, outdoor enthusiasts can dive into activities like kayaking, paddleboarding, fishing, and biking, and appreciate the island's lush landscapes and wildlife preserves. With its relaxed vibe, welcoming community, and stunning shoreline, Anna Maria Island is the perfect getaway for those seeking a quiet, beautiful retreat.
St Augustine
With something to suit all tastes, St Augustine is a great family holiday spot in the Sunshine State. Explore historic forts, still standing after 300 years, immerse yourself in the different eras of the Colonial Quarter, and learn about the city’s African American history at ACCORD Civil Rights Museum.
A trolley tour is a terrific way to see all the main sights of St. Augustine. This includes some of the best beaches in the USA, such as St. Augustine Beach and Ponte Vedra Beach. Looking for a little adventure? We suggest renting a kayak and paddling your way through diverse ecosystems. As for dining, we highly recommend The Reef restaurant for its fabulous seafood options and waterfront views.
Come nightfall, you can explore the spooky side of the nation’s oldest city with frighteningly fun ghost tours. Or, if you’re visiting during the holiday season, you can enjoy the annual Nights of Lights, when the city’s historic district is illuminated with over three million white lights.
Crystal River
As the Manatee Capital of the World, Crystal River draws thousands of curious visitors every year to see these gentle giants. Hundreds of manatees gravitate to this area in the colder months between November and March, and you have the chance to swim alongside these majestic creatures.
There is also lots more to Crystal River than manatees, including its numerous freshwater springs. You can take a kayak or paddleboard tour through the springs, where you’ll glide past lush vegetation and crystalline waters. The springs are also perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and relaxing. Another fantastic way to explore the scenic beauty is taking a clear bottom kayak tour – your underwater window into the world below.
Back on dry land, you can explore the thriving arts and culture scene or pedal your way through the Crystal River Preserve State Park, where you’ll be surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, from mangroves to wetlands. Then discover flavours straight from the sea at one of the many dining spots. Local favourite The Crab Spot is a great place to chomp down on freshly prepared crab and lobster.
