Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned traveller on your next Florida Keys holiday of a lifetime, these markers ensure you won’t miss a moment of magic.

From pristine beaches to dive sites or quirky roadside stops, our guide will take you through the key mile markers that make this trip unforgettable.

Mile Marker 127 – Gateway to Adventure

As you leave Florida City, Mile Marker 127 signals the start of your journey into the Keys. This stretch takes you through the Everglades’ untouched wetlands. It’s a peaceful beginning to your adventure, allowing you to adjust to the slower pace of island life.

Don’t Miss: Alabama Jack’s, a rustic dockside bar perfect for a quick snack before the real adventure begins. Try their famed conch fritters for a taste of the local cuisine.

Mile Marker 108.5 – Gilbert’s Resort

Continue your journey and discover the largest waterfront tiki bar in the Keys. Gilbert’s is a must-stop for anyone seeking a laid-back vibe, delicious food, and live music. This classic pit stop sets the tone for the fun that lies ahead.

Top Tip: Take a few minutes to admire the views from the Jewfish Creek Bridge, just a stone’s throw from Gilbert’s. Families will love the live music on weekends and the chance to rent kayaks or paddleboards for a quick adventure. For history buffs, this area marks the transition from mainland Florida to island life.

Mile Marker 102.5 – John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

As your journey continues, you’ll find the first underwater park in the United States. This stop is perfect for snorkelling, scuba diving, or a glass-bottom boat tour. The park’s coral reefs and marine life will leave the whole family in awe.

Must-See: The Christ of the Deep statue, an iconic underwater landmark. Watch out for parrotfish and colourful coral that make this spot truly magical. Conservation efforts here ensure future generations can enjoy the vibrant reef.

Family Tip: The visitor centre offers engaging exhibits and an aquarium to keep the kids entertained while learning about marine life.

Mile Marker 82 – Robbie’s Marina

Heading further south, Mile Marker 82 invites you to experience Islamorada’s Robbie’s Marina, famed for its tarpon-feeding experience. These massive fish leap out of the water for snacks, thrilling kids and adults alike. It’s a quirky, hands-on way to connect with Florida’s marine life.

Watch Out: Pelicans may try to steal your fish bucket, adding a bit of cheeky fun to the experience. The marina also offers boat rentals and guided fishing trips for an unforgettable day on the water. For foodies, the onsite café serves up fresh seafood with unbeatable views.

Mile Marker 63 – Long Key State Park

Make another pitstop further down and stretch your legs on the Golden Orb Trail, a scenic loop through lush mangroves and hammock trees. This easy hike is ideal for a family picnic while soaking up natural beauty.

Family Fun: Look out for crabs scuttling along the trail—a hit with the little ones. Birdwatchers will enjoy spotting ospreys and herons in their natural habitat. The park also offers a chance to wade into the shallow waters and explore tidal pools teeming with marine life.

Mile Marker 47 – Seven Mile Bridge

Now it’s time to head across a true engineering marvel, the Seven Mile Bridge offers sweeping ocean views that make it a highlight of the trip. Be sure to stop at the Veterans Memorial Park for a photo op.

Pro Tip: Visit during sunrise or sunset for breathtaking colours over the water. The bridge is a great place for a family stroll, with plenty of opportunities for stunning photos. If you’re feeling adventurous, check out the old Seven Mile Bridge, which offers a quieter, pedestrian-friendly route.

Mile Marker 37 – Bahia Honda State Park

Once you’ve crossed the Seven Mile Bridge, take a break at Bahia Honda State Park, which boasts some of the best beaches in the Keys. With shallow, calm waters, it’s an excellent spot for families to enjoy a safe and relaxing swim. The old Bahia Honda Rail Bridge adds a touch of history to the stunning scenery.

Must-Do: Hire a kayak and explore the crystal-clear waters. Pack a picnic and spend the day soaking up the sun while the kids build sandcastles on the shore. Nature lovers will appreciate the park’s butterfly garden and hiking trails.

Mile Marker 30 – Big Pine Key

As you coast along the road, keep an eye out for the famous Key Deer, a tiny species found only in the Lower Keys. The island’s quiet, laid-back vibe makes it a great spot to unwind.

Hidden Gem: No Name Pub, a quirky eatery known for its “dollar bill” décor. The pub’s pizza is legendary, making it a perfect stop for a relaxed family meal. Big Pine Key also offers excellent stargazing opportunities, thanks to its minimal light pollution.

Mile Marker 0 – Key West

You’ve made it! You’ve reached the southernmost point of the continental US! Key West is a vibrant blend of history, culture, and fun. There's something for everyone here from the Ernest Hemingway Home to Mallory Square’s sunset celebrations.

Don’t Leave Without: A slice of Key lime pie from Kermit’s and a photo at the iconic Mile Marker 0 sign. Families will also enjoy the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, a magical experience for kids. For those seeking a cultural touch, visit the historic Fort Zachary Taylor for a glimpse into Key West’s military past.
