If someone asked you to describe Las Vegas, you’re likely to conjure up images of neon lights, towering hotels, roulette wheels and weddings officiated by ‘Elvis’. And while Sin City - living up to its name - is certainly full of tempting night-time distractions and extraordinary entertainment, there’s much more on offer in this iconic destination.

With its high-energy, 24/7 vibes and infinite things to see and do, planning a first-time trip to Vegas can be an overwhelming prospect. Let us be your insider guide to the ultimate Las Vegas getaway and turn those bright neon dreams into an unforgettable reality…

When is the best time to visit Las Vegas?

With year-round attractions, there is no ‘bad’ time to visit Las Vegas, but the soaring summer heat isn’t for everyone. Thankfully, you can find air-conditioned spaces everywhere and glittering resort pools in abundance for cooling down.

Winter daytime temperatures are pleasant, ranging from about 14-17°C, but not always swim-friendly unless your hotel’s outdoor pool is heated, while nights can be chilly (although nothing us Brits can’t handle with decent layering!).

Many people choose to plan their trip around an event, whether it’s a high-profile residency for your favourite singer, a concert at The Sphere or a major sporting event like the Superbowl, where the city becomes abuzz with excitement. This summer, the FIFA World Cup 2026 is being held across North America and promises unforgettable moments and world-class football on the biggest stage. While Las Vegas isn’t an official host city, it will still be one of the most exciting places to watch your team play live, with huge screenings and pool parties to add to the electric atmosphere.

How long should I stay?

The dynamic, non-stop nature of Las Vegas makes for a frenetic few days of partying and indulgence, but that’s all you’ll need here. This isn’t the destination for a two-week holiday; the city is popular with stag and hen parties, special group occasions, and hedonistic couples’ getaways, so 3-7 days will be more than enough before you’re ready for some peace and quiet and your own bed. You can book a Las Vegas twin-centre holiday to combine destinations and balance your thrills with time to chill.

What is ‘The Strip’?

The Strip is a four-mile-long avenue running along Las Vegas Boulevard South from the famous ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign to THE STRAT tower. This buzzing area of activity features world-class resort hotels, famous casinos, fine dining, upscale shopping and a flurry of night-time entertainment including rooftop bars, glitzy nightclubs, and sophisticated lounges. So much is packed into such a small area that you won’t be able to take it all in in one single trip!

How to get around Las Vegas

While The Strip dazzles with its packed line-up of attractions and entertainment, Las Vegas is far bigger and more surprising than it ever looks in photos. Resort hotels are huge and even if they look close to each other, they may still be a good mile or so apart so make sure to get your bearings before attempting to walk between venues (especially in the desert summer heat!).

There are various ways in which to travel in and around downtown Las Vegas and all along The Strip. You can catch a bus, hop on the monorail or grab a taxi very easily and inexpensively.

The Las Vegas Monorail operates along the resort corridor from the SAHARA Las Vegas Station in the north to the MGM Grand Station in the south, offering 7 stations, including stops at the Convention Center, Harrah's/The LINQ, and Flamingo/Caesars Palace, and is our preferred mode of transport.

Plus, many hotels have their own shuttle services that you can take advantage of, and if you’re feeling extra fancy, splash out on a limo for a real taste of that high-roller life!

Best things to do in Las Vegas

Gambling and partying aside, it’s worth popping by a few resorts along The Strip for the atmosphere, restaurants, and over-the-top themed amenities. A serene gondola trip in Venice? Head for The Venetian Las Vegas. A coffee along a cobbled French street? You’ll love Paris Las Vegas. And a rollercoaster ride amid the Big Apple skyscrapers? New York-New York Hotel & Casino will be your best bet. Each hotel offers an immersive, unique experience that’s different every time.

One of the city’s most iconic sights is the magical fountains of the Bellagio, which look extra special when lit up at night and a must-see when visiting Las Vegas. The synchronised music and water jets on the resort’s eight-acre lake make for a wonderful spectacle, and best of all, it’s free!

There are hundreds of shows to see in Las Vegas, from acrobatic performances like Cirque Du Soleil and world-renowned DJ sets to hilarious comedy acts and awe-inspiring artist residencies either at The Sphere or various hotels along The Strip.

For a glimpse of old-school Las Vegas, spend an evening wandering along Fremont Street with its classic neon signs, live music and non-stop entertainment. And if you’re seeking a break from the hubbub of the city, make time for a desert adventure and explore the natural wonders nearby, such as the mighty Grand Canyon, the mesmerising Hoover Dam, or take a scenic drive to the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area for hiking and climbing opportunities.

Useful Tips

  1. Stay on or close to The Strip - this is the hub of the city and where the majority of hotels and attractions are located, so sticking close to this area means less travelling around, saving time and money on transportation, and allowing for more cocktails!
  2. Keep hydrated - this is the desert after all! Make sure you’ve always got water with you when you are walking outside, as temperatures can really soar.
  3. Book shows and restaurants in advance - if you’ve got your eye (or stomach) set on a specific place to dine, make sure you secure your table as early as you can because the best and most popular spots will fill up in no time. Big-name shows and concerts can sell out quickly too, so grab your tickets as soon as you can.
  4. Budget, budget, budget - it’s very easy to get swept up in the wild ride that is Las Vegas, particularly in the casinos. Set yourself a daily budget for spending on attractions, food and drinks, and stick to it.
  5. Tipping is king - in the USA, tips are a big deal and very much expected, especially in Las Vegas, where many workers such as hotel and restaurant staff, blackjack and roulette dealers, taxi drivers, and bartenders rely heavily on them. 20% is an average tip amount for service-based bills, while $2-5 will be fine for quicker services like valet, housekeeping, and concierge. In the casinos, drinks are often complimentary while you’re gambling, and tipping helps ensure attentive, timely service!
  6. Resort fees - most hotels in Las Vegas will charge an additional daily fee (expect between $20-60 per room) that is payable locally to cover the cost of Wi-Fi, in-room amenities and other services.
  7. Pace yourself - the phrase ‘what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas’ isn’t famous for nothing. It’s dangerously easy to over-indulge in Sin City, whether it’s drinking, gambling, partying, or even getting too much sun exposure by the pool. Drink plenty of water, stick to your budget, and take some time to relax and slow down…
