Shopping on Fifth Avenue. Strolling through Central Park. Seeing it all from the observation decks of the Empire State Building.

There’s no bad time to visit The Big Apple, but there are a few sweet spots for making the most of your time. Several factors go into crafting the perfect New York holiday - such as the weather, crowds, costs, school holidays, and of course, the city’s incredible events calendar. Thankfully, as USA Holiday Specialists, we have a wealth of experience to give you a helping hand…

The quietest times

Visiting New York from mid-January to February is your best bet for avoiding crowds. With the post-holiday come down and cooler weather, it tends to be a more peaceful time in the city.

With fewer tourists, it means shorter queues at major attractions like the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the museums along Museum Mile. And while the weather can be quite cold, often dipping below freezing, New York in winter has its own charm. Snow-covered parks, cosy cafés, and the chance to go ice skating in Bryant Park or Rockefeller Centre make it a memorable time to visit. You’ll also find lower hotel rates, seasonal discounts, and a more relaxed local vibe – ideal for a laid-back family getaway.

The in-between months

If you want just the right amount of heat and a tourist season atmosphere - without having to spend hours in line for attractions - visiting between April and early June is often considered a sweet spot. A spring holiday offers the ideal balance of comfortable walking weather, manageable crowds, and affordable accommodation compared to the peak of summer or Christmas. It’s also a great time to take a boat trip to Staten Island, go on walking tours, hop on an open-top bus rides, and admire the cherry blossoms in Central Park.

From September to November, prices often dip from their high summer peak, making it another opportune time to visit. The city's parks and streets transform into a canvas of golden leaves, while the cooler weather adds a crisp charm perfect for sightseeing. If kids are at school, October half term can be a desirable alternative to visiting in the peak school summer holidays. Plus, this time brings a line-up of Halloween festivities that bring all the magic of the holidays - without the Christmas crush.

The busiest months to visit

You’ll find the busiest months to visit New York are the summer months of June, July, and August. These months offer sun-drenched days suitable for picnics in Central Park, sightseeing in T-shirts, and soaking up sweeping views from the Empire State Building on warm summer nights. Due to school being out, this is often when families plan their visit.

December is another busy month for visiting the Big Apple. During this time, the city transforms into a real-life Christmas movie set - the Rockefeller Tree glows, shop windows dazzle, and the holiday magic fills every corner, making it also one of the most expensive times to visit.

Tips for visiting at peak times

If school holidays are your only option, don’t worry - New York is still absolutely worth it. Here are a few tips to make the most of your visit during busy periods…

Book early - Flights and hotels fill up fast for summer and Christmas - book at least 6–9 months in advance to get the best rates.

Go early or late in the day - Major attractions are often quieter in the early morning or just before closing time, helping you skip the biggest crowds.

Plan your itinerary in advance - Consider using Skip-the-Line tickets or attraction passes like the New York CityPASS or Go City Explorer Pass.

Stay central - While hotels in Manhattan might be pricier, staying centrally can save time and money on transport - especially valuable when travelling with children.

Weather considerations

New York’s weather changes noticeably throughout the year, so it’s important to plan accordingly. The winter months from December to February are cold and often snowy, with average highs around 4 degrees, so warm clothing is essential. March to May tends to bring milder weather, ranging from 11 to 21 degrees, ideal for sightseeing. Whereas Summer, from June to August, is hot and humid, with temperatures often exceeding 30 degrees, which is great for light packing but can be uncomfortable for long days outdoors. Autumn offers cool, crisp weather with highs between 10 and 25 degrees, making it another comfortable time to explore the city.

The cheapest times to visit New York

If you're looking to experience the magic of New York without the crowds or inflated costs, January through March is your golden window. With flight and hotel prices at their lowest, you'll save big before the spring rush hits, meaning more of your budget can go toward mouthwatering street food, Broadway shows, and iconic sights like the Empire State Building. It may be chilly, but with fewer tourists and shorter queues, you’ll breeze through attractions and enjoy a more relaxed, authentic slice of the city.

Special events, festivals and holidays

New York City’s events calendar is packed year-round, offering something special in every season. February kicks off with New York Fashion Week, drawing global attention, while March brings Irish spirit with the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the blooming beauty of Macy’s Flower Show. Spring is a treat for nature lovers, with cherry blossoms rivalling Japan’s, and culture seekers can enjoy free Shakespeare in the Park, often starring famous actors. Summer turns up the excitement with 4th of July fireworks, and the Museum Mile Festival, where museums open their doors for free amid live music and performers.

As autumn arrives, so do Halloween parades in Greenwich Village, followed by the iconic Thanksgiving Day Parade. The year wraps up in true New York style with Christmas lights, festive markets, and the unmissable Times Square New Year’s Eve ball drop.
