New York, known for its bustling urban life, towering skyscrapers, and the world-renowned Times Square, often surprises us with its wealth of natural wonders. It’s these hidden gems scattered across the state that offer a tranquil escape, allowing you to connect with nature in one of the world’s premier holiday destinations.

So, whether it’s your first bite of the Big Apple or it’s a returning favourite, check out our favourite nature experiences to uncover beauty beyond its iconic skyline…

Stroll through Central Park

No visit to New York City is complete without a trip to Central Park. Spanning 840 acres, Central Park offers a peaceful retreat amidst the chaos of the city. There are various attractions to see in the park from the bold Bow Bridge to Central Park Zoo and The Conservatory Garden.

Personally, we love finding a prime sunbathing spot on the sprawling Great Lawn before paying tribute to the late great John Lennon at Strawberry Fields Memorial. No matter how much time you have, there’s always something new to discover in this vast, ever-changing urban oasis.

Admire Niagara Falls

Located on the border between the United States and Canada, Niagara Falls is an awe-inspiring destination that continues to leave visitors in sheer amazement. It consists of three major waterfalls—the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls, and the Bridal Veil Falls.

For many, the classic experience is standing on the viewing platforms or taking a boat tour like the famous Maid of the Mist, which brings visitors close to the thundering waters. However, other options include gorge trails and helicopter rides. But whichever way you choose to take in this iconic sight, you should have your camera at the ready.

Hike the Adirondack Mountains

For outdoor enthusiasts, the Adirondack Mountains offer some of the best hiking in New York State. The Adirondacks are home to over 2,000 miles of trails, offering everything from easy day hikes to challenging climbs. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or just looking for a peaceful escape in the mountains, this region has something for everyone.

One of the most popular trails is the High Peaks region, which features the 46 highest peaks in the Adirondacks. For an awe-inspiring adventure, tackle Mount Marcy, the highest point in the park at 5,343 feet. The summit offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, lakes, and valleys, rewarding hikers with breathtaking scenery.

Explore Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region is a hidden treasure of upstate New York. Known for its long, narrow lakes, charming small towns, and award-winning wineries, this area offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences.

We recommend peaceful moments along the shores of the region's crystal-clear lakes, such as Cayuga and Seneca, or exploring the stunning gorges and waterfalls of Watkins Glen State Park. The Finger Lakes are also a paradise for wine lovers. The region's vineyards and wineries line the lakesides, offering visitors a chance to taste world-class wines while soaking in the breathtaking landscape. Beyond wine tasting, the area offers a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, boating, and cycling, making it a perfect escape for those seeking both relaxation and adventure.

Hit the slopes at Gore Mountain

New York’s cold climate during winter is perfect for skiing. There are several spots to take advantage of throughout the city, but Gore Mountain Resort is the largest and offers excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities - without the crowds of some of New York’s more famous resorts.

With a variety of terrain, Gore is a great destination for families. The resort offers plenty of beginner-friendly slopes and lessons for all ages, making it an excellent choice for those learning to ski or snowboard. Best of all, Gore’s ticket prices and accommodations remain relatively affordable compared to bigger resorts. So, if you're looking for a high-quality skiing experience without breaking the bank, you can't go wrong at Gore.

Kayak at The Hudson Valley

Stretching along the Hudson River from the Capital Region to Westchester County, the Hudson Valley is a hidden natural treasure that combines outdoor recreation with cultural richness. Just a short drive from New York City, it delivers a range of outdoor experiences.

We recommend kayaking, as in our experience, there’s no better way to experience its breathtaking scenery than from the water. Kayaking in the Hudson River offers paddlers an up-close view of majestic landscapes and rich wildlife. Whether you're a seasoned kayaker or a beginner, the Hudson Valley provides a variety of options for a memorable paddle.

Ride a hot air balloon over Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park is home to one of the most breathtaking canyons in the Eastern United States. Once named America's most beautiful state park, it stretches along the Genesee River as it carves through a dramatic gorge, creating three stunning waterfalls. Towering cliffs, rising more than 550 feet, are surrounded by lush forests, offering a striking contrast between the rugged terrain and vibrant greenery.

One of the best ways to experience the beauty of the park is to take flight in a hot air balloon. As the balloon rises, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the deep gorge, the lush forests, and the impressive waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. The peaceful silence and slow drift of the balloon allow you to fully take in the beauty of the landscape below, providing a unique and tranquil perspective of one of New York's most iconic natural wonders.

Picnic at Indian Island Country Park

For a relaxing day outdoors, Indian Island County Park in Riverhead is our go-to destination for a peaceful picnic. Nestled on the Peconic River, the park offers scenic views, quiet walking paths, and wide-open spaces ideal for spreading out a picnic blanket. It’s a great spot for those who want to enjoy nature without the hustle and bustle of larger, more crowded parks.

In addition to picnic areas, Indian Island County Park provides a platter of recreational activities, including fishing, kayaking, and hiking. The park is also a great place for birdwatching, as it is home to a variety of species, particularly during migration seasons. Take a stroll along the river or simply relax in the park’s serene environment, and you’ll quickly see why this hidden gem is beloved by locals.
