Mexico is not all tacos and tequila – although it’s enough of a draw for us. This is a place full of vibrancy throughout every aspect of daily life. Its undeniable energy comes from its lively music, spicy food, poignant arts, ancient history and of course beaches that are so immaculate it’s hard to believe they’re real.
Set in the southern portion of the North American continent, Mexico is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world. Bordered by the USA to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south, its 5,700-mile shoreline is surrounded by the bluest waters of the Caribbean Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico – making it ideal for tremendous twin-centre holidays.

Our Mexico Favourites

Chichén Itzá
One of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chichén Itzá is a phenomenal archaeological site in the centre of the Yucatan Peninsula that is recognisable all over the world. Located about two-and-a-half hours’ drive from Cancún, it makes for an essential and effortless day out when visiting the country’s most popular beach destination.
The incredible ancient ruins of this Mayan city are one of Mexico’s most important and sacred cultural landmarks, and if your multi-centre holidays in Mexico take you to this part of the country, this is a must-visit attraction to absorb historical significance and beauty that dates back nearly 1,500 years.

Mexico City
Mexico’s frenzied capital may sometimes be overlooked in favour of its popular oceanside counterparts in Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen. Dare to mix up your typical two-week beach trip with a stint in this electrifying city, which offers the perfect complement to exciting Mexico twin-centre holidays.
The birthplace of Frida Kahlo – one of the country’s greatest artists – Mexico City is packed full of culture and history, from its art galleries and museums to its cathedrals and theatres. And let’s not forget the food. Mexico City is where all the country’s regional cuisines are represented, from top-class gourmet restaurants to scrumptious street food and market stalls!

Teotihuacán
Once a great Mesoamerican city and considered one of the first advanced civilisations on the North American continent, Teotihuacán boasts a complex of splendid pyramids built as early as 400 B.C. and whose historical significance rivals the mighty Chichén Itzá. Notable sites include the fascinating Pyramid of the Sun and Pyramid of the Moon, the Ciudadela (the Citadel) and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl (the Feathered Serpent).
Set approximately an hour’s drive from Mexico City, guided tours here are plentiful, making Teotihuacán a wonderful option for a day out if you’re spending time in the capital.

Copper Canyon
Head up to northern Mexico to experience its real frontier land in Copper Canyon – or Barranca del Cobre – in a series of 20 remarkable canyons formed by six rivers, which is seven times larger than Arizona’s famous Grand Canyon.
There is an abundance of opportunities for hiking, cycling, trekking and horseback riding here, but the most popular way to see the scenery is on the Copper Canyon Train Tour. This breathtaking journey traverses the rugged, spectacular terrain between Chihuahua City and Los Mochis on a once-in-a-lifetime ride and is well worth doing. Make sure to book in advance!

Oaxaca City
This colonial UNESCO World Heritage city – pronounced wah-hah-cah – is a gem in Mexico’s south, offering visitors a captivating escape away from the more popular hotspots along the coast. Full of vibrant culture, incredible gastronomy and elegant architecture, Oaxaca presents a more tranquil place to spend a few days absorbing the best of Mexican life.
Take plenty of time to wander its attractive streets, pretty churches, spirited plazas and traditional markets while staying in a boutique hotel and enjoy a romantic adventure in the heart of Mexico.

Tulum
Tulum is one of the prime beachside destinations in the whole of Mexico, boasting endless stretches of white sand, cobalt waters, a near-perfect year-round climate, and an ancient ruin or two for a splash of culture.
Playa Paraíso lives up to its name as a picture-postcard beach with white sand, calm turquoise waters and waving palm trees. A few small hotels and restaurants line the shore as well as a huge beach club, if you’re in the partying mood. The small beach of Playa Ruínas sits below the impressive Maya ruins of the El Castillo pyramid. Its imposing cliffs, impossibly blue waters and flour-soft sands make it an immensely popular spot for swimming and taking photos.

Cancún
Rated as one of the top places in the world for watersports, Cancún is the most popular of Mexico’s beach destinations for both couples and families, and it’s easy to see why. The Zona Hotelera (Hotel Zone) is packed with all-inclusive resorts along its 12 kilometres of flawless shoreline with kid-friendly swimming and loads of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkelling, too.
Playa Marlin is particularly great for watersports like jet skiing and parasailing, while Playa Langosta’s wide sands, shallow waters and inflatable obstacle course makes it the perfect base for a family day at the beach!

Playa del Carmen
An hour’s drive south along the coastline from Cancún – located in the heart of Riviera Maya region – sits the popular tourist city of Playa del Carmen, another lively hub to spend a few days on multi-centre holidays in Mexico. You’ll be spoiled for choice for luxury all-inclusive hotels and wide sandy beaches here.
Parque Fundadores is perhaps the most iconic (and busiest) beach in Playa del Carmen, not least for its imposing arch greeting you as you approach the sugar-soft sands and aquamarine ocean beyond. There is also a full-size volleyball court and plenty of bars and restaurants to quench your thirst after all that relaxing.

Cabo San Lucas
Set on the southern Baja California Sur peninsula, Cabos San Lucas – often known simply as Cabo – is a hit with celebrities for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters and its party atmosphere. And with a flight time of less than two-and-a-half hours from LA, Cabo is a great place to visit for a long weekend on twin-centre holidays with California hotspots.
This popular coastal city offers some of the best snorkelling in the country as well as romantic beaches such as Lover’s Beach, which is accessible only by panga fishing boat. Spend the day here sunbathing with a picnic then pop across to the ominously named Divorce Beach to witness unparalleled Cabo sunsets from the Pacific side.

Quinta Avenida
Quinta Avenida – Fifth Avenue to the non-Spanish speakers out there – is an attractive pedestrianised shopping street in Playa del Carmen that runs parallel to the beach. The area features a range of different shops and eateries for a splendid evening out after a morning of sun-worshipping on the beach.
You’ll find everything here from souvenir shops and boutiques to international clothing brands and quirky independent stores as you wander aimlessly through the crowds. Grab a bite to eat and watch some fabulous street entertainment while absorbing the electric nighttime vibes.

La Isla Shopping Village – Cancún
Cancún isn’t all about beaches, there’s also shopping! La Isla is a hugely popular open-air mall set right in the heart of the city’s Zona Hotelera, featuring loads of excellent stores from high-end to affordable brands, as well as a host of entertainment for the whole family.
Take the kids and catch a movie, visit the interactive aquarium or take a whizz on the Sky Wheel for gorgeous views over the city. Afterwards sit down for a meal at one of the dozens of restaurants, which include everything from tacos, pizzas and burgers to succulent seafood and Japanese cuisine.

Mercado 28
This established flea market is just a short bus or taxi ride from Cancún’s Zona Hotelera and offers a fantastic place for sourcing locally made handicrafts, art and souvenirs on Mexico multi-centre holidays. Awash with colour and tantalising aromas from the food court, Mercado 28 is a maze of vendors selling t-shirts, jewellery, pottery and handbags – a great time to test out your bargaining skills!
Spend a couple of hours meandering the market in the morning before it gets too hot, then head back to your hotel for some afternoon R&R by the beach or pool.

La Lagunilla
If you’re looking for a unique Mexico shopping experience, be sure to spend a lively Sunday morning at La Lagunilla traditional market. Located in Mexico City, it’s one of the country’s largest and features three distinct sections: clothing, food and furniture. You may not be in the market to buy some vintage sunglasses, but there’s no reason why you won’t end up purchasing some and taking them home!

Isla Espíritu Santo
This uninhabited island off the Baja California Sur peninsula is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national park, which is accessed via a short boat trip from the port town of La Paz. At Espíritu Santo you can swim with sea lions, dolphins, rays and sea turtles, witness more than 100 species of bird, and try to catch a glimpse of a whale shark off the coast.
If you’re keen to get closer to nature on your multi-centre holidays in Mexico, Isla Espíritu Santo is the perfect spot for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and hiking amid a pocket of stunning and unspoiled natural beauty.

Cenotes
One of Mexico’s most familiar and spectacular natural sights are its cenotes, or sinkholes, formed from collapsing limestone bedrock to reveal crystal-clear groundwater beneath. These magical and tranquil cave-like swimming spots are prolific around the Yucatan Peninsula, making for an easy day trip from Tulum, Cancún and Playa del Carmen.
The well-known Cenote Ik Kil is popular for its proximity to Chichén Itzá, which is just 10 minutes’ drive away, but also for its dramatic vines hanging through the hole down into the cave. While Cenote Dos Ojos or “two eyes” boasts one of the world’s longest underground cave systems, with two submerged sinkholes connected by a 400-metre-long tunnel it’s a gorgeous spot for swimming and relaxing.

Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve
Late November to February in Mexico brings about one of the world’s most striking natural phenomena in this UNESCO World Heritage Site, which covers around 56,000 hectares. Millions, perhaps a billion, monarch butterflies descend to the region for their annual migration from cooler climes.
Flushing the trees orange and their collective weight making the branches literally droop, these stunning butterflies are a magical sight to behold and a worthwhile visit if you’re in Mexico City. The Piedra Herrada Sanctuary is the easiest to get to from the capital and is under two hours’ drive away.

Cozumel
Cozumel is a small, sun-drenched island off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula opposite the resort of Playa del Carmen, providing a lovely slice of authentic Mexico away from the main crowds on the mainland.
It’s only a 30-40-minute boat ride across so can easily be done as a day trip, however, there is plenty to keep you here for a few days. With some of the most beautiful reefs in the world, Cozumel is a wonderful place for snorkelling and diving. You can also take a jeep or e-bike tour of the island, visit the gorgeous Punta Sur Ecological Park or spend a lazy day at one of its glorious beach clubs!

The Huasteca Potosina
Home to some of Central Mexico’s most striking scenery, Huasteca Potosina is a verdant subregion of San Luis Potosí, a few hours’ drive northwest of Mexico City. Brimmed with immaculate tropical swimming holes and breathtaking waterfalls, this area of stunning natural beauty offers a dreamlike escape from the resorts and cities flocked by tourists and is well worth a visit.
Visit during the dry season between November and March and spend time exploring its historical sites, bird watching and swimming in its jungle-clad caves. Embark on a hike to the Cascada de Tamul – without a doubt the region’s most stunning waterfall – to paddle, swim and explore the beautiful canyon and valley that surrounds it.

Guacamole
Another classic dish that was invented in Mexico but is now part of international cuisine is the versatile guacamole. Often used as a side dish or salad ingredient, this avocado-based dip includes lemon or lime juice and sometimes chili, onion, coriander or tomato - depending on personal preference.
Any Mexican food restaurant you eat in will no doubt feature guacamole on its menu, whether as part of a main dish or as a side accompaniment. Either way it’s a must-try in the country of its origin where the avocados won’t get much fresher than this!

Tacos Al Pastor
Slightly different from the minced beef or shrimp tacos you may have tried back home, tacos al pastor are a traditional and authentic variation influenced by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico City during the 1920s and 30s.
Using spit-grilled slices of pork that have been marinated in a delicious savoury and citrussy sauce, the corn tortilla tacos are also topped with pineapple, salsa and garnished with coriander for a mouthwatering result.

Tequila
If you’re going to sample Mexico’s famous distilled spirit, this is the place to try it. Made from the blue agave plant, tequila is a type of mezcal and can only be produced legally within designated regions of Mexico.
If your Mexico twin-centre holidays take you to the Jalisco region, take a guided distillery tour to the rustic town of Tequila – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – about an hour’s drive from Guadalajara. The Jose Cuervo Express Tour is a popular day trip option from the city every Saturday, taking visitors to the oldest distillery in Latin America to see its brick ovens and oak barrels, with plenty of tequila shots along the way!

Chiles en Nogada
This patriotic dish comprises the three colours of the Mexican flag: red, green and white. Mild-flavoured green poblano chillies are stuffed with a mixture of shredded meat, spices and fruits such as apple, pear and peach, and covered with a walnut-based cream sauce with lashings of bright red pomegranate seeds on top.
Widely considered as the national dish of Mexico and a typical addition to festival celebration menus, you are likely to find this taste sensation everywhere, so make sure to try it.

Chilaquiles
This traditional Mexican breakfast dish comprises lightly fried or toasted corn tortillas that are quartered and covered in green or red salsa, cheese, meat and sour cream, fried eggs and beans – and various other toppings. Chilaquiles are the ultimate buffet breakfast food staple here and you’re more than likely to come across them during your hotel stay or at street food stalls and restaurants on your travels.

Enchiladas
Odds are you’ve had an enchilada or two in your life, but unless you’ve eaten this Mexican icon in Mexico, you haven’t lived. Dating back to Mayan times, these wondrous treats are corn or flour tortillas wrapped around meat, fish, cheese, beans, and vegetables then covered in cheese and chili sauce and baked to perfection.
Try the yummy chicken enchiladas at Porfirio’s, located in Cancun’s Zona Hotelera, which offers street-inspired dishes with a twist, in a welcoming and contemporary atmosphere.
