San Francisco Highlights
San Francisco is known for many things and lends itself to several nicknames including ‘The Golden Gate City’, ‘The City of Fog’, and ‘The City by the Bay’. And with its welcoming locals and wonderful laid-back vibes, this is the city that has it all.
Superb Shopping
Whether you’re after some quirky one-off clothing items or some high-end designer gear, San Francisco has it all. Head to Union Square if you’re in the mood for a spending spree – or perhaps just some window shopping if you’ve understandably spent all your money on burritos. And for a splash of 60s nostalgia, take a trip to the colourful streets of Haight-Ashbury and purchase a pair of those flares you’ve always wanted!
Amazing Food Scene
San Francisco is a foodie’s paradise and known worldwide for its culinary creativity and delicious food innovations, which have been influenced by the cultures and flavours of the waves of immigrants settling in the city over the decades. Give your tastebuds a party and try classic dishes like Mission-style burritos, clam chowder and the delectable ‘cioppino’, a mouthwatering Italian-American fish stew that typically includes Dungeness crab, shrimp, mussels, scallops, squid and more.
Iconic Landmarks
San Francisco showcases its pride and progress through its many must-see historic landmarks. From wandering the former island prison of Alcatraz to cycling amongst the clouds along the Golden Gate Bridge and riding the old-charm cable cars that glide through the streets - your days in San Francisco will be equally unique and magical.
Great Beaches
It might not be the best place to swim on California’s Pacific Coast, but San Francisco’s beaches are beautiful, brisk, and built for walks, paddling, sunbathing, and soaking up casual city vibes during your downtime. Dotted around the Bay are swathes of pretty sands, hiking trails, historic ruins and secluded coves for breathing in that crisp ocean air – and with stunning Golden Gate Bridge views, there are few more enticing spots to spend your days.
Washington D.C. Highlights

Together with a vast museum collection, historic neighbourhoods and multi-ethnic influences everywhere you turn, this unique capital city is more than just the home of the country’s president.

San Francisco & Washington Holiday FAQs
San Francisco & Washington Holiday FAQs
San Francisco & Washington Holiday FAQs
One of the best times to plan San Francisco twin-centre holidays is during the spring months, which typically span from March to May. During this season, both cities have pleasant weather conditions and aren’t as busy as during the peak summer season.
In San Francisco, you’ll find temperatures between 15°C to 24°C at this time of year, which is perfect for exploring the iconic landmarks of the city. Washington, D.C. is also pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 11°C to 22°C. The city's cherry blossoms also usually bloom during this time of year, creating a picturesque atmosphere around the National Mall and Tidal Basin.
Alternatively, consider a visit to both cities in the autumn months. It’ll be cooler in San Francisco (between 12°C and 21°C), however, autumn can be a scenic time to visit. In contrast, Washington has warmer autumn months. The city's foliage begins to change, creating a beautiful backdrop for exploring its historic sites.
Summer is also an option, but there are a few things to bear in mind, weather-wise. San Francisco, summers are known for the ‘June Gloom’, when the city can be shrouded in fog, while Washington can get quite hot and humid during this time of year.
Most of the time, San Francisco is 3 hours behind Washington, D.C., and 8 hours behind the UK. Washington, D.C. is 5 hours behind the UK, so be sure to change your clocks when you’re travelling to and from each destination.
Be aware of time changes in March and November, where the time difference can change as Daylight Savings Time comes into effect.
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) are the two major airports with numerous daily flights connecting the two cities. When travelling from one to the other on San Francisco and Washington twin-centre holidays, the flight duration is usually around 5 to 6 hours, depending on the route and any layovers.
Alternatively, the Amtrak train, more specifically the Amtrak Capitol Limited route, runs between Emeryville, California (near San Francisco) and Washington, D.C.'s Union Station. This scenic train journey takes around two days, stopping in various cities along the way - so you’ll need time on your side to explore this option.
You can plan ahead as much as you need to - prices are guaranteed up to 36 months ahead of your holiday date, meaning you can secure twin-centre holidays with an initial low deposit and pay the remainder in monthly instalments.
When packing for your trip, bear in mind the time of year and your forward destination, as you’ll likely experience varying climates across the different locations and seasons.
For San Francisco, which is known for its microclimates, it's a good idea to bring layers. Jumpers, a light jacket, long trousers, and comfortable walking shoes are a must, as the city often experiences cool and foggy weather.
In Washington, during spring and autumn, a mixture of short and long-sleeved shirts as well as a light jacket is the best approach. Winters can be cold, so if you’re travelling at this time of year, be sure to pack a warm coat, gloves, and a hat. Summers, however, can be hot with high humidity, so bring light and breathable clothing, as well as sunscreen and a hat.
Generally, both cities have good public transport options, so it’s not strictly necessary to rent a car. In Washington, the Metrorail and Metrobus systems have extensive coverage of the city, making it easy to reach popular attractions, museums, and neighbourhoods.
Similarly, in San Francisco, you’ll find a well-developed public transport system, including buses, cable cars, and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit), that will easily connect you to most of the city's attractions. If you want to explore areas outside of the city, such as the wine country in Northern California or remote natural parks, renting a car may offer more flexibility, but there are plenty of guided group tours offering transportation.
San Francisco twin-centre holidays have so much to see and do that it’s wise to prioritise, depending on how much time you have to spend. A visit to San Francisco wouldn’t be complete without seeing the iconic Golden Gate Bridge - you can take a leisurely stroll or bike across this majestic suspension bridge and enjoy the panoramic vistas of San Francisco Bay and the city skyline.
Another essential stop is Alcatraz Island, which is renowned for its historic prison. A scenic ferry ride takes you to the island, where you can delve into the intriguing history and explore the former penitentiary.
Lastly, don't miss Fisherman's Wharf, a vibrant waterfront district teeming with seafood restaurants, and street performers. Wander through eclectic shops, eat the signature clam chowder, and soak up the lively atmosphere to get the true San Francisco experience.
Washington twin-centre holidays are fantastic for history buffs, since it’s a city brimming with rich history and iconic landmarks. First and foremost, take a visit to the National Mall, which is home to the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the U.S. Capitol Building, all set amidst beautifully landscaped greenery.
Exploring the Smithsonian museums offers a deep dive into American history, art, and culture, with the National Air and Space Museum being a particular highlight. The historic neighbourhoods of Georgetown and Capitol Hill are great for soaking up the city's ambiance and are filled with historic homes, boutique shops, and delicious dining options.
Lastly, the sombre yet essential visit to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the powerful Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial gives more insight into the nation's history.
San Francisco offers a wealth of family-friendly activities, making it a great spot for visitors of all ages. The Children's Creativity Museum is an interactive wonderland where kids will love the hands-on art and technology exhibits. A trip to Alcatraz Island is an exciting adventure for the whole family, with tailored audio tours suitable for younger visitors. Golden Gate Park has a variety of playgrounds, including Koret Children's Quarter, so little ones can burn off some energy while parents relax amidst the natural beauty of the park.
In Washington, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum is great for exploring aviation and space history, and has plenty of interactive exhibits suitable for all ages. A stroll or bike ride along the National Mall is a great way for the whole family to visit iconic landmarks like the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument while having a leisurely family picnic. Kids will also love the International Spy Museum, which has fun interactive experiences where you can test your spy skills together. Lastly, taking a paddleboat ride on the Tidal Basin during the spring's cherry blossom season makes for a memorable family outing.
Both San Francisco and Washington host a variety of special events and festivals throughout the year. In San Francisco, film buffs might consider timing their visit for the San Francisco International Film Festival in April, where you can enjoy a diverse array of films that attract cinephiles worldwide. If you're a music lover, Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in August hosts an array of fantastic live performances in Golden Gate Park.
In Washington, D.C., the National Cherry Blossom Festival in the spring is a must-see, with the Tidal Basin adorned in beautiful cherry blossoms. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival in June is a celebration of diverse cultures and traditions, and is a great cultural experience for visitors.
