Miami & Washington FAQs
Miami & Washington FAQs
Miami & Washington FAQs
To avoid the sweltering summer and high season crowds, spring and autumn are the best times to visit both Miami and Washington DC.
In spring, temperatures peak around 27°C in April in Miami, and you’ll also miss those Florida hurricanes of peak summer, making it a perfect time to explore and relax. Washington is cooler, but sees the ideal weather for sightseeing, with April temperatures reaching an average of 19-20°C.
If you’re planning your Miami and Washington twin-centre holidays later in the year, we recommend November, when the worst of the hurricane season has passed Miami and the prices are a little cheaper than popular winter. The temperature is around the same as April, hovering around the 26-27°C mark.
Autumn brings a crisper temperature in Washington, perfect for what the American’s call “leaf peeping” – seeing and photographing the crisp, golden leaves and autumnal hues. Temperatures are around 14°C, so be sure to pack your jumpers!
Washington’s famous National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in late March and early April, where the city blooms with stunning pink florals. It’s a popular time with tourists, so we recommend booking your Washington multi-centre trip early to avoid disappointment!
Miami and Washington DC are generally 5 hours behind the UK, both observing Eastern Standard Time (EST). However, if you’re travelling in March or November, look out for when their time zone changes to Eastern Daylight Time, as US clocks go forward or backward an hour on different Sundays than in the UK.
Getting to Miami is a breeze, with direct flights from both London Heathrow (LHR) and London Gatwick (LGW) to Miami International Airport (MIA) – just 8 miles northwest of Downtown Miami and about 13 miles west of South Beach.
For Washington DC, UK travellers should fly into Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) or Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI), with flights from LHR; IAD is about 26 miles outside DC while BWI is roughly 30 miles outside the city.
If you need flight advice for your Miami and Washington twin-centre holiday, just ask our friendly USA experts.
Pretty far! We are delighted to offer guaranteed prices up to 36 months ahead of your multi-centre holiday. Simply secure your package with an initial low deposit today and you can pay the remainder of your trip in affordable monthly instalments.
You came to Miami for sun, sand, and surf, and you’ll enjoy that with abundance. But there’s more to Miami than the beaches. From museums to malls, here are the spots you need to add to your Miami multi-centre itinerary.
For a peaceful day embracing Mother Nature, head to the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden, filled with 84 acres of tropical plants, flowers, and trees. Hop on one of the 30-minute tram tours to catch it all or head to the Wings of the Tropics exhibition to see 40 species of beautiful butterflies.
Immerse yourself in the edgy art of Wynwood Walls, located in what’s arguably Miami’s coolest neighbourhood. Every second Saturday of the month, Wynwood comes alive with its Art Walk, which isn’t to be missed!
Finally, head just south of downtown Miami to Coconut Grove, where you’ll find the magnificent Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Once the posh winter estate of a prestigious Chicago businessman, you’ll be able to tour the home and marvel at the Renaissance furniture, tapestries, and art, and stroll its 10 acres of manicured gardens.
Visiting the White House is possible, but not easy, and you’ll need to plan in advance. If you wish to schedule a tour, you’ll need to contact the UK embassy in Washington DC to request a public tour. Be warned, tours fill up quickly and are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
No visit to Miami is complete without a day at South Beach, known locally as SoBe. Famed for its Art Deco architecture and miles of powder-soft sand, you’ll find plenty to enjoy on a beach day here, from swimming and sunbathing, to volleyball, to bars and restaurants.
Searching for somewhere a little off the beaten track? Nestled in over 800 acres, Crandon Park is a peaceful place to kick-back and relax. Golf lovers will love the winding course, while kids and adults alike will love the abundance of nature.
In fact, there are more than 15 popular beach spots in Miami and ample smaller coves and hideaways, so why not stay a little longer? Plan your Miami multi-centre escape.
No matter who you’re travelling with on your Miami and Washington multi-centre holidays, you’re sure to find plenty of places to eat that everyone will love (yes, even the fussy eaters!). Our top picks are Amara at Paraiso on 7th Avenue for a romantic dinner overlooking the water, or The Wharf Miami for a grab to bite with family; from pizzas to specialty burgers, there’s a street food option for all!
Of course, no visit to Miami is complete without enjoying a taste of Cuban cuisine, so pay a visit to Sanguich De Miami on 8th Street or one of the countless other Cuban hotspots the city boasts.
Washington DC is home to one of the most acclaimed restaurant scenes in the United States, with everything from delicious local diners to Michelin-starred gems. For the latter, head to The Inn at Little Washington – the only restaurant in the Washington DC metropolitan area that has three Michelin stars and an additional green star. Here, beautifully-crafted dishes meet over 14,000 wines in the in-house cellar, with a dedicated sommelier to help you choose.
For a more wallet-friendly option, don’t miss the infamous half-smoke (hot dog) at Ben’s Chili Bowl, which is as much of a historical DC landmark as it is a restaurant.
