Florida offers highs that go far beyond the theme parks. There’s the quiet thrill of a black bear moving through the trees, the ripple of a manatee in a spring, or the splash of a dolphin leaping beside your boat. Moments like these stay with you, leaving Florida in your heart long after the souvenirs are forgotten.

Florida is one of the most biodiverse places in the United States, home to animals that feel both exotic and iconic. From crocodiles in the Everglades to sea turtles nesting on golden beaches, the Sunshine State offers families the chance to see wildlife not just in zoos but in their natural habitats. This guide reveals when and where to find them, along with a few easy ways to add these encounters to your holiday plans.

Ready to trade the theme parks for Florida’s wild side? Explore our Florida package holidays, and yes, the rollercoasters will still be waiting.

Black Bears

The Florida black bear is the state’s largest land mammal, and they tend to be spotted in forests, wetlands, and wildlife corridors rather than city streets. The Ocala National Forest is a good place to try your luck, with hiking trails that wind through their natural habitat. Wekiwa Springs State Park also has occasional sightings, especially if you venture onto the quieter trails.

Your best chance of seeing them is in the cooler hours of the day when bears are foraging. Remember, though, these are wild animals. Keep your distance, use binoculars, and enjoy the thrill of spotting them without disturbing their environment.

Crocodiles and Alligators

Florida is the only place in the world where crocodiles and alligators live side by side. The American crocodile is mostly found in the southern tip of the state, particularly around Everglades National Park and Biscayne Bay. Alligators, on the other hand, can be seen just about everywhere: lakes, rivers, golf course ponds, you name it.

For families, an airboat tour is one of the most exciting ways to see them safely. Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures, included in our Wildlife Explorer package - one of our five Ocean Explorer bundles packed with free Orlando activities - whisks you across the wetlands at speed before slowing down so you can spot gators in the shallows. If you want guaranteed sightings, Gatorland in Orlando offers a mix of close encounters, shows, and even a zip line over a gator-filled marsh.

Manatees

Gentle, slow-moving, and irresistibly lovable, manatees are one of Florida’s most iconic animals. Nicknamed “sea cows,” these peaceful herbivores gather in warm-water springs when the weather cools down. Winter is the best time to see them, especially between November and March.

Head to Blue Spring State Park, about an hour from Orlando, where hundreds of manatees gather in the clear water during colder months. Another great option is Crystal River, one of the few places in the world where you can swim alongside them. Just remember that respectful viewing is key – you’re entering their home, so give them space.

Dolphins

Florida’s coastline is a playground for dolphins, and spotting them in the wild is one of the state’s great joys. Bottlenose dolphins are the most common, often seen riding boat wakes or leaping out of the water as if they know you’ve got a camera ready.

The Gulf Coast, especially around Clearwater and Sarasota, is famous for dolphin cruises that almost guarantee a sighting. If you’re staying near Orlando, the Indian River Lagoon on the east coast is also a hotspot, thanks to its rich estuary system.

Sea Turtles

Every summer, Florida’s beaches become nurseries for sea turtles. Between May and October, loggerhead, leatherback, and green sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. It’s one of nature’s most moving spectacles and one you’ll never forget if you’re lucky enough to witness it.

The Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge, near Melbourne Beach, is one of the most important nesting sites in the world. Guided night-time turtle walks allow families to watch nesting mothers in a safe and respectful way. You might even spot tiny hatchlings making their brave journey to the sea.

Birds of Prey

If you’ve ever wanted to see a bald eagle soaring overhead, Florida is one of the best places to do it. The state is home to a huge population of eagles, osprey, and owls. Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, just next to Kennedy Space Center, is a birdwatcher’s paradise. You’ll also find roseate spoonbills, herons, and wood storks adding splashes of colour to the marshes.

Closer to Orlando, Wild Florida’s Drive-thru Safari Park is another great option. Here, you can spot exotic birds alongside giraffes, zebras, and antelope from the comfort of your car – all part of our Wildlife Explorer and Adventure Explorer packages.

Panthers

Florida panthers are elusive and critically endangered, which means sightings are extremely rare. They live deep in the forests and swamps of South Florida, particularly in Big Cypress National Preserve. While you’re unlikely to see one in the wild, just knowing they’re out there adds a sense of mystery to Florida’s wilderness. If you’d like to learn more about conservation efforts, the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge is worth a visit.
