Orlando almost needs no introduction. The theme parks, entertainment and shopping are high on most family's holiday wish list. Pairing a week or so in Orlando, with a few nights in Sarasota is becoming an increasing popular way to discover more of what Florida has to offer. Sarasota was once a circus city, famed for John Ringling's circus which was relocated from Connecticut to sunny Sarasota. A weird and wonderful energy can be found all around Sarasota, in the street art, the music and of course, the Ringling – Florida's State Museum and artistic hub.
No trip to Orlando would be complete without heading to the biggest and best theme parks in the world – Walt Disney World Resort, Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld Parks and Entertainment. From the rides to the entertainment and even the nightlife, you'll never find the time to do it all, so planning ahead is definitely advised!
Shopping in Orlando can be an all day activity – the expansive shopping malls come fully equipped with outdoor areas, salons, bars and restaurants. What's more, this is the home of outlet shopping – if you want to pick up some big brand names at discounted prices this is the place to be.
Orlando's International Drive is an 11 mile road which has been famed for being an entertainment hub for many, many years. The latest development to the area is the ultra modern I-Drive 360, home to the Orlando Eye, a 400ft giant Ferris wheel which offers splendid views over the whole city. The area also has attractions including Sea Life, Madame Tussauds and a selections of restaurants and bars.
Orlando is one of the largest golfing destinations in the world, with more than 170 courses to choose from. Many of the most popular villa communities and hotel resorts have award winning golf courses on-site so getting some tee time in should be a breeze. If golf isn't your thing, there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy a bit of nature, between the airboat rides and nature reserves you're never far away from some open green space.
As well as being an architectural delight, the Ringling is the State are Museum of Florida and houses many of Sarasota events, shows and exhibitions. You'll find classic masterpieces and contemporary pieces from all over the world. Here you can also learn about Sarasota's intriguing past as a circus town – a fact that the city is very proud of.
The city of Sarasota offers more insight to the areas quirky, artistic energy. The city is blessed with stunning historical architecture as well as colourful wooden houses and plenty of galleries to explore. The area has also established a firm café culture, with restaurants spilling onto the streets where you can spend a few hours simple watching the world go by.
Open daily, this state park is one of the oldest and largest in the whole of the States. The iconic Mayakka River flows through the park giving life to prairies, hammocks and wetlands. You can choose to tour this park on foot, by bike, boat or through the treetops with an incredible canopy walk. The wildlife you'll see is stunning and diverse with tropical birds, deer and of course – alligators.
This was voted the number 1 beach in America in 2015, so you know you're in for something special. Start every day with free yoga on the beach. Enjoy a 1 mile run along with beach with visitors and locals which takes place every Tuesday evening. On a Sunday, celebrate sundown with the Siesta Key Drum circle and dance on the sand as the sunsets.
