Orlando & Clearwater FAQs
For a more relaxed theme park experience, think about visiting in the quieter months of February, March, or September when crowds aren’t quite so heavy. Orlando also hosts a variety of exciting events throughout the year, so plan your travel dates around event calendars if you want to check out specific occasions. Highlights include Universal’s Mardi Gras in February through to April which hosts colourful Carnivalesque parades or Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in November and December which invites you to experience jolly holiday festivities with the Main Mouse himself.
Florida is often called the Sunshine State, so you can count on gorgeous sunny weather no matter when you visit. Just bear in mind that Florida summers can get super hot and humid, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C. If you prefer milder and more comfortable weather, try planning your trip during the winter months. Also be aware that Florida has a hurricane season that runs from June to late November, so be ready for unexpected storms and heavy rain.
To find out more about Orlando twin-centre holidays, take a moment to check out your options.
Florida’s year-round sun means you can enjoy beach-ready weather whatever time you visit. However we recommend coming in the sunny-but-milder winter months if you want to avoid a hot and sticky climate from the humidity and high temperatures, particularly if you’re a family travelling with sun-sensitive kids.
Or if you’re a wildlife lover who wants the best chance to spot migrating birds, turtles and marine life, try the months of April, May and June when they’re most frequently seen.
There are plenty of options when it comes to your twin-centre holidays - go exploring!
Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the city’s largest airport and the go-to option for travellers heading into Orlando. It's also conveniently close to the Downtown theme park district, situated just 6 miles away. There are a couple of options for travelling into Clearwater: St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, located just 12 miles from Clearwater Beach, or the larger Tampa International Airport only 30 minutes away.
Orlando and Clearwater are approximately 100 miles apart, meaning it’ll take you around 2 hours by car if you’re hiring your own vehicle. Alternatively, there are plenty of express coaches that’ll take you between the cities, just expect a slightly longer journey of around 2 hours and 45 minutes if there are additional stops.
Absolutely. The itineraries of our twin-centre Orlando and Clearwater holidays have endless possibilities. Orlando is one of the world’s best holiday destinations for families thanks to its never-ending list of must-visit theme parks and attractions — from Walt Disney World to Universal Resort to standalone recreational activities like mini golfing, go-karting, and indoor skydiving.
Clearwater is a hub for families, too. Enjoy beach watersports, explore the 51-acre Moccasin Lake Nature Park, catch a game of baseball at BayCare Ballpark, or come face to face with marine creatures whilst learning all about the conservation efforts of Clearwater Marine Aquarium. And don’t forget Busch Gardens, a must-visit animal theme park packed full of thrilling ‘coasters just 40 miles away in Tampa (a great mid-way point between Clearwater and Orlando!).
The city of Clearwater is named after its main attraction: Clearwater Beach, an award-winning 4 km stretch of white sands that’s always abuzz with surfers and sun-seekers. It’s certainly the most popular beach for Clearwater holiday-goers.
However there are numerous other beaches located in and around the main Clearwater district, including Sand Key Beach and North Beach both just a few miles and a short car journey away if you fancy a quieter and less-touristy switch up from the main area. There’s also the ever-popular Indian Rocks Beach which is a little further out (about 15 minutes away) and super closeby to the Splash Harbour Water Park.
Yes, you can swim at the Clearwater beaches all-year-round! The Gulf of Mexico waters tend to be wonderfully warm and calm, making a gentle dip in the waves the perfect way to cool off from the Florida heat.
However, just make sure you pay close attention to the warning flag systems in place that alert swimmers of any hazards, including oncoming strong currents, rip tides, and dangerous sea life like stingrays and jellyfish.
The calm turquoise seas of Clearwater are the perfect natural habitat for bottlenose dolphins, making it one of Florida’s best destinations for dolphin spotting! Best of all there’s a variety of dolphin-watching boat cruises to pick from, the best of which include live commentary by an onboard tour guide and guaranteed dolphin-sighting!
Walt Disney World is home to 4 must-visit parks: Epcot, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and The Magic Kingdom (the world’s most visited theme park). Whilst Epcot and Animal Kingdom combine exciting attractions with educational explorations of wildlife, science, technology, and world cultures, Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios are home to classic rides like Space Mountain and offer the chance to enter the worlds of your favourite films, including Star Wars, Toy Story, and so much more.
Orlando is known as the Theme Park Capital of the World, so rest assured there are plenty of parks to pick from during your Orlando and Clearwater multi-centre holidays. The theme parks at the Universal Resort are both must-visits. Islands of Adventure is made up of mythical lands like Marvel Super Hero Island, Harry Potter’s Hogsmeade, and Jurassic Park where you can ride the award-winning high-speed Velocicoaster. Or there’s Universal Studios, a fun-filled park that takes you beyond the screens of iconic TV and film franchises like Despicable Me, The Simpsons, and Transformers.
But it’s not all about Disney and Universal. SeaWorld is Orlando’s go-to spot for rollercoasters (like the brand-new stand-up surf ‘coaster) and LEGOLAND is perfect for mini-thrillseekers with its line-up of over 50 small-but-mighty kid-friendly rides.
Yes, plenty! Water babies will be in their element amongst Orlando’s wide selection of water parks, aka the perfect alternative when you need a break from all the rides. Instead, you can relax around the pools and lagoons at one of Disney’s epic water parks: Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.
Typhoon Lagoon is a wind-swept oasis with a laid-back island feel, home to all sorts of slides, raft rides and lazy rivers. And don’t miss the star of the show: its surf pool that booms continuous 6 ft waves every 90 seconds. Or there’s Blizzard Beach, a frosty winter wonderland of yet more slides and rides including the 12-story high Summit Plummet, one of the world’s longest and tallest body slides.
Universal has its own water park too: the incredible Volcano Bay water park teeming with South Seas-style rivers, pools, and slides all rideable with the handy TapuTapu wearable that allows you to join a virtual queue and free up your day without long lines. Even SeaWorld has its very own Aquatica park, a 4-time winner of America’s best outdoor water park that’s a top pick for thrill-seekers thanks to its huge selection of speedy slides and towering splashdowns.
